What would Dad do?

Fuck that, he got us into this fucking mess.

What would Daemon do?

“We need a distraction, then we need to run for it.”

“I’m down. What’s the distrac—”

Gunfire slams into the table hiding us, and both our eyes are wide with our impending death as they meet.

Fuck. I can’t die tonight. I need to look at that goddamn test.

I can’t die before I know the truth.

When it calms down, I peek out again, finding men with balaclavas covering their faces.

Fuck. I really fucking hope one of them is Ant, who can get me out of this.

“Take Jerome’s gun. We fire and run. We’ve just got to pray their shots are shit.”

“That’s suicide,” Jerome says.

“Do you have a fucking better idea?” Jodie snaps, making him pale further.

“No, I—” Something cracks before the wall beside us crumbles.

“Oh shit.”

Explosions go off one after the other, gunfire rains down, and the heart-sinking realisation that we’re too slow seeps deep into my bones.

We’re gonna die here.

And it’s all my parents’ fault.

My eyes burn with tears, my hope dwindling as my hand rests against my belly.

A scream pieces the air as a body comes flying over the table, bullets still hitting it every few seconds.

“What the—”

“Daemon,” I cry, relief overwhelming me as I fly into his arms.

“It’s okay, Angel. I’m gonna get you out of here, okay?”

I pull back and look at his face.

His eyes are as dark as the dead of night, and he’s got blood sprayed over almost every inch of him.

He’s got a gun in one hand and a red-tinged knife in the other.

“You need to come too. I won’t go without you.”

“There’s no time for an argument, Calli.”

The gunfire lessens, leaving my ears ringing.

“When I say go, you’re going to drag his bleeding arse out toward that door, and you’re not going to stop running until you’re in the SUV that dropped you here. It’s waiting for you. Stella and Emmie too.”
