“Uh-huh,” he said.

“Can I get three tequilas, please.Shots, by the way.”

“Sure.”He shrugged.“Anything else?”

I looked back at Gabriella and Valentina.“Would you two like anything else to drink aside from the shots?”

“Oh yeah, I would love another cocktail,” Gabriella said, and Valentina shook her head.

“No, Gabriella.You’ve had enough.”

“Oh my gosh, Valentina.Really?”

“Yes, Gabriella, really.I’m your best friend, and I know you didn’t eat much for dinner tonight. And I—”

“Fine, just the shots.”Gabriella grinned at me.“She gets on my nerve sometimes, but she’s a good best friend.”

“I’m the best, best friend,” Valentina said with a smile. My eyes met hers, and we just stared at each other for a couple of seconds. She was not what I’d expected her to be when her father had talked about her.I could see where her capricious nature came in, but she didn’t seem like a spoiled rich girl. She didn’t seem the sort to just go shopping for expensive clothes and jewelry. She seemed down-to-earth and nice. She seemed like the sort of woman I would be friends with and definitely the type of woman I would sleep with. But there was something unique about her, something special.

“Here are your tequilas. That’s going to be forty dollars.”I looked at the guy and shook my head.

“Really?Forty dollars for three shots of tequila?”

“That’s what I said.”

I pulled out a twenty and held it in my hand.He looked at it and frowned.

“Did you not hear me?”

“Do you want me to tell your boss you’re pocketing money?”I asked him softly. He stilled slightly and glared at me.

“What are you talking about?”

“I'm a private detective, and I know exactly what’s happening here. Now, if you want to keep this job, you’ll accept this twenty and be happy about it.”He stared at the twenty in my hand for a couple of seconds and then back into my eyes.

“You know what?Keep it.Shots are on the house.”

“Oh, thank you,” I said, putting the twenty back in my pocket.

Valentina took her shot and then handed the glass to Gabriella.“What was that about?”she asked as we walked away from the bar.

“Nothing,” I said.“Now, about us.”

“What do you mean about us?”

“I think—”

“Let’s do the shots.”Gabriella interrupted me.And I looked over at her with a small smile. She was nice, and I liked her, but I was hoping she would give Valentina and me a couple of seconds together. How was I supposed to get Valentina to like me, to want to be with me, if her best friend was constantly interrupting our conversations?

“Okay.I want to say thank you to my new friend, Sam,” Gabriella said.“Cheers.”

“Cheers,” I said as I downed the shot. The liquid burned through my throat as it hit my stomach.I licked my lips and stared at Valentina, who had downed her shot quickly.

“That was strong,” she said, smiling slightly.

“Yeah, it was.”

Gabriella looked at the dance floor.“Okay, guys, I’m going to go and dance again.I see a hottie.”She made her way toward the dance floor, and I thanked God silently for hearing my prayers.
