CHAPTER4

“Ihope we’re not going to have to call Annie Mommy,” Santino said, rolling his eyes as we made our way up to my dad’s apartment.

“Come on now, we’ve never had to call any of them Mommy.”I stared at my brothers.“Let’s be nice.”

“We’re always nice,” Stefano said.“I just don’t get Dad.Why can’t he settle down with just one woman?”

“You know why,” I said, and he nodded. We all looked at each other and shrugged. We were all used to meeting my dad’s new girlfriend.Every single year, he dated a new woman.Since my mom, Patti, had left, he’d never been able to commit to one woman for a long time.It was quite sad to see how my mom had broken his heart. She’d left when I was just a boy and made her way to Los Angeles with her new lover to try to break into the business. My dad had been devastated and left to raise four young boys alone.

The first woman he dated had been Sienna, and she’d been amazing. In fact, she was still in our lives and like a second mom to us.Even though she and my father had broken up, she was still good friends with him.Her daughter, Elise, was Stefano’s best friend, and she was like a sister to the rest of us.

“So, what do you know about this Annie?”Sergio asked, holding a bottle of red wine.

“All I know is that she’s young.”Stefano shook his head.“Like our age.”

“Well, Dad is still a handsome man,” I said, not wanting everyone to be down on Annie before we even got inside. My brothers were loud and obnoxious, and I always felt it was my duty to ensure they weren’t rude to strangers.Yes, we were fed up with having to meet our dad’s new girlfriend every year, but I understood why he found it hard to give his heart to anyone else.

It was the same reason we all found it hard to give our hearts to anyone.None of us brothers had ever really been in a serious relationship or talked about getting married or having kids.We were all somewhat broken from our mom leaving us, but we never talked about it, and we certainly had never had therapy, though a part of me felt like we should.I mean, I didn’t even date a woman for more than twenty-nine days.

I’d read once that if you do something for thirty days, it becomes a habit, and I never wanted to become a habit in anyone’s life. So, for the women I went out with, on day twenty-nine, that was it.Sure, they were heartbroken and questioned why it had to end, especially if we’d been having fun, but I wasn’t interested in having anyone get too close to me.I didn’t want my heart broken, and I didn’t want to break any hearts.

“Okay, guys.Everyone be nice.”I knocked on the door, pulled out my key and opened it.“Hey, Dad, it’s just us,” I said as I walked inside.Because my dad was former Mafia, he was always nervous and suspicious of people walking into the house. That was why I always knocked the special knock before I used the key to get inside.I didn’t want my father pulling his gun or getting nervous that we were the cops coming to arrest him or rival Mafia members coming to take him out.

“Hey, I’m in the kitchen, boys.Come inside and meet Annie.”

“We’re coming, Dad,” I said and looked at my brothers.

“Here we go,” Santino said, rolling his eyes.I shook my head at him.He shrugged.Santino was the youngest, so he was the one who remembered our mother the least. He was also the hardest one to reach, which made me sad.My brothers were my life, and I would do anything for them.I just wish there was a way to go back in time so our mother wouldn’t have left and ruined us all.

I headed into the kitchen first, wearing a big smile on my face as I looked around.A young blond lady with huge boobs and a white tank top was sitting at the table, and I pressed my lips together. What the hell was my father thinking?

“Hi,” she said, jumping up, her boobs bouncing as she walked over to me.“I’m Annie.I’m Lorenzo’s girlfriend.”She looked at me and then at my brothers, her eyes widening.“Wow, all of you are super attractive.Lorenzo, why didn’t you tell me my stepsons were so handsome?”I looked over at Stefano, who was trying not to laugh.Sergio and Santino were exchanging glances, and I could already tell they didn’t like her.

“Nice to meet you,” I said, holding my hand out.“I’m Sam.”

“Oh, Sam, let me hug you,” she said, pushing her breasts into my chest. She grabbed my face and gave me a quick smack on the lips, and I stared at her in surprise.“I mean, we’re like family now, right?”She giggled and then moved over to Stefano.I looked at my dad, who was opening the fridge and taking out some beers.

“Hey,” he said, his blue eyes wise and wary.

“Hey, Pops.How’s it going?”

“Not bad.How’s the business?”

“Great.I just got an amazing case, and we’re getting paid a lot of money.”

“Good, good.”He nodded.“Anything I need to do?”

“It’s fine.You’ve been keeping okay?”

“I’ve been keeping as well as I can.I had dinner with Giuseppe last night. He said that …” He paused and looked over at Annie.“Well, we boys will talk later.”

“Oh, you don’t have to not talk about something because of me.”Annie giggled. She was standing next to Sergio now, grasping his upper arm.“Flex again. You’re so strong.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m the strongest.”He shrugged, looking pleased.“Stefano’s the fighter.”

“Oh, really?”She walked over to Stefano again.“I mean, you definitely look like you’re built.”

“Yeah, well, look at Sam’s big blue eyes,” he said, and I glared at him.She walked back over to me.
