CHAPTER5

Icalled Valentina, and as I waited for her to answer the phone, I hoped she hadn’t given me a fake number. The phone kept ringing, and I chewed on my lower lip.

“Hello?”she answered breathlessly.“Who’s this?”

“It’s me, Sam.I met you the other night.”

“Oh, Sam, how are you?”she said.“Sorry, I just got home with some groceries.”

“No worries.I was starting to wonder if you’d given me the wrong number.”

“I didn’t.”

“Good,” I said.“How have you been?”

“Not bad.Just hanging out with Gabriella and trying to make some plans.”

“What are you making plans for?”

“I really want to open a dog café.”

“A dog café?What’s that?”

“It’s a coffee shop where you can come and play with dogs. They have cat cafés, but I’m much more of a dog person than a cat person. So I thought it’d be really cool. And then people can adopt the dogs.”

“Adopt them?”

“You know, like take them home.”

“I see.”I hadn’t realized that she had plans for her life.“Sounds cool.”

“Do you like dogs?”

“They’re okay.”I chuckled.“I can’t say I’ve spent much time with them.My dad didn’t go for pets.He had enough just taking care of my brothers and me.”

“Oh, so he never remarried then?”

“No,” I said shortly.“He didn’t.”

“He must have really loved your mom.Has he been single all this time?”

“No, he hasn’t.”

“Oh, okay.”

I was impressed that she didn’t push it.She could obviously tell that this was a sore subject.“Actually, Valentina, I was calling because I was hoping you and Gabriella would join me at one of my brother Stefano’s matches.”

“Matches? What is he?Like a rugby player, or polo, or …”

I started laughing then, a loud, deep sound that rumbled in my stomach.

“What’s so funny?”

“Rugby or polo?I’m a Valenti.”

“Yeah. And what does that mean?Valentis don’t play rugby or polo?”

“No one whose family makes less than a couple of million dollars a year plays rugby or polo. He’s an underground fighter.”
