CHAPTER7

“Do you have any antibiotic ointment?”Valentina’s voice was soft as she touched the side of my face.

“I’m not sure,” I mumbled. My eyes were finding it hard to focus.“You can look in my bathroom.”

“Okay,” she said.“Which one is it, again?”

“Straight ahead,” I answered, but the sound was slightly distorted.I was surprised that Valentina had come up with me.I hadn’t expected her to.The fact that she’d gotten us a cab and brought me back to my place showed how caring she was.“You don’t have to do this, you know?”

“It’s fine,” she said.“I used to think I wanted to be a nurse when I was younger.”

“Oh yeah?”I was surprised at the comment.

“Yeah, but then my dad said if I was going to go into the medical field, I’d have to be a doctor.”She laughed slightly.“And I was pretty confident I didn’t want to go through college and med school and residency.”

“Oh?And why is that?”

“Because I didn’t like school that much.Okay, so this might hurt a little bit.”I felt something cold pressed against the side of my forehead.

“What is that?”

“Don’t worry.I’m going to have you right as rain.”

“You are?”I asked. My eyes opened, and I took in her almost angelic appearance. She reminded me of Florence Nightingale.Well, at least a picture I’d seen in a textbook when I’d been in elementary school.“You’re good at this. You would’ve made a good nurse,” I said.

“Thanks.I think so as well.”

“Modest, aren’t you?”

“I just know what I’m good at and what I’m bad at.”

“I’m guessing you’re bad at choosing guys.”

“Very funny, Sam.”

“What?I’m just saying.”

“You’re just saying what?”

“I mean, Shane seems like a bit of a …”

“Don’t say loser.”She pouted.

“Um, you took the words right out of my mouth.”

“Don’t be mean, Sam.We’re having such a good evening.”

“It seems like Shane wasn’t having a good evening.Well, maybe he was,” I said, laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

“I mean, his poetry, right? You can’t tell me you thought it was good.”

“I think it’s admirable that he’s so creative and trying.”

“So you thought his poetry was good?”

“That’s not exactly what I’m saying.”Her lips trembled slightly.“You’re going to make me seem like a bitch.”
