“Because that would be weird.”

“Why would it be weird?”

“Me sleeping at your place two nights in a row when, well, we’re not even dating.”

“Yeah?I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

“I mean, if you want to hang out, you can come over to mine.”

“Is that an invitation?”I asked, grinning.

“Yeah, it is.”

“Well, then I don’t know how I could say no and still be a polite gentleman.”When the elevator dinged to let us know that we’d reached the ground floor, I grabbed her hand, and we walked out.“Shall we catch a cab?”I asked her as we stepped outside.

“Sure.Or we could walk. It’s only about twenty minutes.”

“It’s up to you.I can do either one,” I said, staring at her.“I know tonight has been slightly overwhelming for you, so if you just want to get home and relax, we can take a cab.”

“A walk would be nice.”She smiled.“It’s a nice evening, and I can get my breathing under control and calm down somewhat.”

“Sure.Lead the way.”

“I feel like such an idiot,” she said as we walked down the street, and I gazed at her.

“Why?”

“Because why would I go with him to a hotel room?”

“Because maybe you thought you were going to …” I paused.“Actually, I don’t even know how to end that statement. What did you think you were going to do?”

“I don’t know.”She sighed.

“Can I ask you something, Valentina?”

“Yeah, sure.Go ahead.”

“Why did you go on a date with him?”

“What do you mean?”

“You went to dinner, and then you went with him to a hotel.”

“Yeah?”

“But I thought you weren’t interested in him?”

“I wasn’t.”

“So, why did you go out with him?”

“I don’t know.I mean, he’s someone I’ve gone out with before, and this morning, you didn’t say that you wanted to ask me out again, so I figured why not?”

“What?What are you talking about?”

“I mean, last night I thought, you know, something was going to happen, and then it didn’t because you said you were tired. You turned your back on me, and I felt like I had been rejected.”She made a face.“Obviously, that didn’t feel good. And then today we hung out, and then you just left and were like, ‘Well, I’ll be in contact.’You didn’t ask me out or say you liked me or—”

“So because I didn’t ask you on a date, you decided to meet up with that douchebag? How does that even make sense?”
