“Wow.He got you to say ‘meh’ already?”
“I mean, I’m not going to say anything else since he’s your brother and all.”I started laughing then.
“Don’t worry.Because he’s my brother, I know how much of a dickhead he can be.”
“You can say that again,” she said.
“And you’re okay being here with him, right?”
“Oh yeah!”she assured.“I’m a big girl.”
“Good.Because if you wanted him to leave, I’d tell him to leave.”
“You couldn’t do that.This is his family get-together.”
“Ah, but I’m the oldest.I get to tell them what to do.”
“You’re really nice.Thanks, Sam.”
“Don’t sound so surprised,” I said as we walked back into the living area.“I hope you’re hungry, because Sienna makes a lot of food when we come over.”
“I’m absolutely starving.She said she made lasagna and chicken parmigiana and eggplant, and—”
My stomach growled as she listed off all the items we were about to eat.“And I can’t wait,” I said with a grin.I handed Sergio his beer and shook my head at him.
“What did you do?”I said softly.
“What are you talking about?”
“Why does Gabriella think you’re a jackass?”
He looked at me with a smile.“Oh.I was just playing with her.She takes everything too seriously.”
“What do you mean, you were just playing with her?”
“I just asked her if she wanted to come back to mine.”
“Okay.And why did that get her so upset?”
“Maybe because I said, ‘I know you want to come back to mine, but you’ll have to leave at two o’clock in the morning because I like to sleep by myself.’”
“Oh my God.Sergio, you’re such a dickhead sometimes.”
“What?I didn’t want to give her any expectations of cuddling and staying the night.”
“So you told her she could come back to yours to fuck and then she could leave?I’m guessing she said no.”
“Yeah, but not as politely as that.”He looked over at her.“She’s mad at me, huh?”
“Yeah.She is.”
He sighed.“I guess I can apologize.”
“I think you should, Sergio.”I walked back over to Valentina and smiled at her.
“Are you enjoying yourself?”
“Yeah.”She touched my arm lightly.“This is really nice.I love being at big gatherings like this.It’s something you always see on TV and in the movies, but I don’t really know many people who have huge families that get together.”
“Yeah.It’s funny that you say that.I always kind of felt sorry for myself because I didn’t really have a big family, but I guess you're right.”I looked around and stared at Sienna and Elise, Stefano, Sergio, Santino, Gabriella, Ella, and then back at Valentina.“I guess I’m lucky to be blessed with the family members that I do have.They’re really quite amazing.They really are.”
“I’m glad it was you I kissed when I was at that bar the other day,” she said with a smile.
“I’m glad it was me you kissed as well.”I gave her a wink.“What do you say when we’re done here, we go back to my place?”
“I think I’ve been waiting for you to ask me that all night.”
