“So we’re trying to figure out if this guy is cheating?Is that what we’re trying to do?”I sat in the back seat of Sergio’s car.Sergio turned around and nodded.
“Yep.That’s what I said.”
“And all three of us need to be here because …?”I looked at Stefano, and he shrugged.
“Because all three of us work for the agency?”
“And where’s Santino, then?”I asked.
“I don’t know.”Sergio let out a sigh.“I’ve been texting him, but—”
“But what?”
“He hasn’t responded, obviously.”
“Dudes, I am on a case right now.I don’t really need to be dealing with this.”
“Exactly what is going on with you and Valentina?”Stefano turned around and gave me a look.
“I feel like you’re in over your head here, Sam.”
“What do you mean?”
“I just feel like you are catching feelings for this girl when she’s a paycheck.And when you catch feelings for someone who’s a paycheck, it normally doesn’t end well.”
“I’m not catching feelings for her, but she’s more than a paycheck.”
“Wait a second,” Sergio said.“I don’t want to be an asshole here, but she’s a hundred grand worth of a paycheck.A hundred grand that we need.Dad just got another notice on the door.He’s going to be evicted in thirty days unless we come up with the rent.”Stefano started laughing, and Sergio and I looked at him with concerned expressions on our faces.
“Are you losing it, Stefano?”
“No, but do you know what I was just thinking?”
“What?”Sergio asked.
“If Annie knew how broke Dad was, there’s no way she’d be with him.”
“Very true … I wish Dad would tell her.”I chuckled.
“Dad would never tell her.He has too much pride for that.”
“True.”I nodded.“Fine.We will use some of the money from the deposit that Hamilton Ford made and pay off his arrears.”
“I thought you said we don’t use the money until a case is complete.Just in case they want their money back,” Stefano asked in concern.
“Yeah, well, we don’t want Dad to get evicted, and the case is nearly done.”
“Oh?”Stefano looked surprised.“It is?”
“Yeah.She’s no longer with Shane, which is what her dad wanted.Now I just need to break her heart so she’ll go running to Daddy’s young, rich hedge fund manager.”
“And you’re okay with that?”Stefano asked me, his eyes peering into mine.
“Why wouldn’t I be okay with that?You ready for your fight?”
“It’s a sure sign that you’re not feeling great when you change the subject like that.”
