“Don’t mock me,” Sonia snapped. “You called me, so I came. If he forbade me outright, I wouldn’t be here.”

“Or he let you come here as a distraction. Then he sent a guard dog after you to scout my property and report back,” McGoven said darkly. “What the hell is he playing at?”

“You know what he’s like.”

“Oh, yes.” McGoven’s eyes flashed the color of steel. “I know exactly what he’s like. That’s what I’m worried about.”

Sonia choked out an exasperated sigh. “Youare the one who left us, remember? Lukka has done his best to keep order. You want so badly for him to fail, but he hasn’t. We’re doing fine under him, and I won’t deny that because of your…history. I’m sorry if that upsets you.”

“That’s not what I meant,” McGoven said softly. “I just want to know you’re safe.”

“Weare.”

“And… Is Kyle still his second?”

Loren stiffened. Irritation prickled her skin suddenly, white-hot. It didn’t stem from her—just him. His face may be blank, but the guttural way he uttered that name left nothing to the imagination as to how McGoven felt about this man. Kyle.

Pure, unadulterated hatred.

“H-Huh?” Panic flitted across Sonia’s features before she smothered it behind a cheerful smile. “Enough pack gossip. Don’t worry. Please. It will only be a few days until Lukka comes himself. You’ll be fine. Both of you. As for what you sensed… I’m sure it was just a scout, making sure I arrived safely.”

“Even so, his scout most likely picked up her scent. Then, all of a sudden, your Alpha calls you back. Why?”

Sonia stammered. “Um….”

Loren didn’t miss the way they both glanced ather. The tight-lipped expression could only be described as…wary. Whatever the source of their unspoken tension was, it had to do solely with her.

“I’ll sort this mess out,” Sonia insisted. “I promise.”

This time, she didn’t sound as optimistic.

OUTSIDE NEW WALSH

“He smelled me,” the dark-haired youth murmured excitedly, bouncing on the passenger’s seat. “Iknowhe did, though I think he was more worried about that horse, but I saw her—”

“You did?” Kyle cocked his head, his interest piqued. “Well, what did she look like?”

The boy, barely nineteen, shrugged. “I couldn’t get a good look. She’s pretty, though. Tall and skinny. Lukka might want her, after all—”

“Get your head out of your cock, kid,” Kyle scolded. “What about hereyes? What did her damn eyes look like?”

That detail might reveal who her real father was, at least.

The kid paused. Judging from how long it took him to process the damn question, Kyle’s suspicions were confirmed—he was a fucking idiot.

Figures. When it came to reconnaissance, he always got saddled with the bottom of the barrel. At least, this latest fool—his name was Micha, or something like that—could shift at will, and he was fast. Youhadto be to outrun Bill McGoven on his own damn property.

“Green. I think,” Micha announced. “Though, I wasn’t really looking at hereyes,if you know what I mean—”

“I don’t,” Kyle snapped. “Now shut the fuck up. I need to think.”

He palmed the steering wheel, eyeing the deserted road they were parked alongside. McGoven’s property was over an hour away, but he could still sense the bastard. He just hoped McGoven had noticed him in return. Wouldn’t that make for an interesting reunion?

“Why hasn’t Lukka taken her in?” the boy asked, fidgeting in the passenger seat. While skilled physically, he was apparently too stupid to heed a direct order. “He takes in outsiders all the time. He took me in—”

“Because we aren’t a damn halfway house,” Kyle replied. “And you and the othersearnyour keep.”
