The hell I will.In a rush of determination, she took a step forward, not surprised a bit when the man took one step back.

He was close to breaking. She knew it. Relished in it.

Give in, she willed him, without ever saying it out loud.

She didn’t have to.

The world around them faded away, leaving just the two of them locked in a battle for which he was no match. All at once, one word popped onto the tip of her tongue, and she found herself voicing it without any hesitation. “Submit—”

Grrrr…!

The sound cut through everything, as loud as the roar of a jet engine. Loren knew, even before the stocky body of a black wolf appeared over the crest of the hill, just who it belonged to.

McGovengrowled again. Then, in a blur of shadow, he inserted himself between her and the intruders with one bounding leap.

Loren found herself pushed back by his bulk, and she stumbled, right into the hard chest of Micha, who maneuvered her behind him.

They waited.

The red-haired man watched them all—only he didn’t look so smugly self-righteous anymore. He looked shaken. Loren didn’t miss the way his eyes kept cutting to her. Partly confused. Partly…fearful?

Leave! In his current form, McGoven couldn’t say the word aloud, so he just growled instead—but there was no missing what he meant.

“This isn’t over,” the red-haired man insisted. His tone kept it from seeming cliché. It was a promise. A statement of fact.

This isn’t over.

“You killed a member on pack territory, rogue. Sooner or later, you will have to pay.”

Like shadows, he and the three others turned and left.

But the ordeal was far from over.

It was like a switch had been flipped inside of her. In an instant, Loren deflated, sinking to the ground by Naomi’s prone form.

“Naomi!”

There was blood. So much blood that she could smell it, thick and heavy and fresh.

“One of them bit her.” The voice was Micha’s, spoken from over her shoulder. “I tried to stop it…I—”

“She’s not dead!” Somehow, Loren knew that even before she reached out for a pale throat and felt a pulse.

It wasn’t very strong, though. While one side of her neck remained whole, the other side, hidden beneath a lank section of blond hair, was wet and dark…

“We need to get her to a hospital—”

Before she could even try to reason outhow, a dark figure appeared beside her, gathering Naomi in his arms as easily as if she weighed nothing.

“Come on,” Bill’s voice was gruff. Loren didn’t have to glance up to know that he was naked. All she did was lurch to her feet, too horrified by everything else to blush at the sight.

He took off, heading for the house, and Loren followed, croaking out to Micha, “Come on!”

He blinked and lurched into motion, heavily favoring his injured leg.

It seemed to take an eternity before they reached the house—though given the way McGoven moved, it could have only been minutes. He was already inside by the time she mounted the porch steps.
