“Yeah, that’s Jase Warner.”

Emily crossed her arms. “I don’t know how you pulled this stunt, but—”

“I need a refill,” Katrina said, probably unheard above the eruption of applause. She pushed past Emily and started walking towards the bar, only to be stopped when Emily grabbed her arm.

“I’m not done with you.”

And that was it, Katrina was done, She spun towards Emily, ready to lash out, but refrained from doing so in the middle of Cade’s. Instead, she motioned that she was headed outside, and wasn’t surprised when Emily followed her. The noise was muffled when the door shut behind them and they stood in the packed parking lot facing one another.

“You know, I’m tired of—”

“Why did you tell Lorenzo about Miranda?” Katrina cut her off. “We all know you’ve been playing a game. So, what is it? Did you want Lorenzo to swoop in and take her so that you didn’t have to share your inheritance? But Daddy died before that will could be changed, and now here you are fighting for custody of someone who isn’t even related to you. Why?”

“You think you know me?”

“I know I do. You don’t do anything unless you’re going to benefit from it. What was the point of befriending me again? To ensure I didn’t speak to Lorenzo? And why didn’t you tell me that you’d found him?”

“What I do in my life is my business.”

“So, your business is to fuck with other people’s lives. Wow, you’re awesome.” The sarcasm dripping from Katrina’s tone was palpable.

“I came here to get my sister.”

“She’s not your damn sister. And she’s not a piece of property. She’s—”

“In a bar that she has no business being in. My lawyer will have a field day with this.”

“And you be sure that your lawyer knows you’re too busy to take care of a child, so you leave her with a nanny who’s more invested in a television show, and a driver who had no problem bringing her to a bar to meet her father. She has a right to get to know him! And you and I both know she’d be better off with Ren.”

“I’ve seen the dump of a neighborhood he lives in.”

“He’s preparing to move. He’s going to be in a good neighborhood with good schools and he’s going to dedicate his life to that little girl. Can you say the same?”

“And where does that leave you? Poor little Trina, left alone again. You and I both know that you’ll never get past him cheating on you.”

“He didn’t cheat.”

“So, what, he tripped and fell into my stepmonster’s vagina?”

“He...” Katrina stepped closer. “Didn’t...” One more step, and she was nose to nose with Emily. “Cheat.”

“Keep your delusion then. I’ve read the diaries, the journals. I’d be more than happy to share them with you, bring you back to reality.”

Katrina kept her voice low, speaking through clenched teeth. “She raped him.”

Emily’s head fell back in laughter.

And Katrina’s hand met Emily’s cheek with a loudsmackthat echoed as Emily stepped backwards, her hand on the side of her face.

“Oh, and you’re going to assault me now. Even better for your precious Ren.”

“This, right here, right now, is between you and me. Tell me why you’re so goddamned determined to keep us apart.”

“You had no business going after him to begin with. Stick to your own kind.” She caught Katrina’s wrist before she had a chance to slap her again.

“Hey! Hey, what the hell is going on out here?” Lorenzo was outside, jogging towards them when Emily let go of Katrina.

“I’m here to pick up my sister.”
