“Nah, man I had no idea. Was this Martinez someone you found, or did he find you?”

“Stop changing the subject,” Katrina interjected. “You’re not telling us why you didn’t come to find us earlier, not until...were you looking?”

“You’re easy enough to find. Both of you, especially Justin with all of the charity work you do.”

“That’s part of my job.”

“Yeah, I gathered that.” Lorenzo winced then shook his head as if he could will the pain away. “I wasn’t ready, okay?”

Justin’s brows furrowed. “For what?”

“For the third degree.”

“He doesn’t want to answer my questions, either,” Katrina said. “Don’t feel bad.”

“Why did you leave, though?” Justin held his hands out, as if the answer would appear out of thin air.

Lorenzo shook his head. “Not today.”

“So he keeps saying,” Katrina added.

“You promised, Trina.”

She crossed her arms. “Yeah, I kinda did.”

“Thanks a lot,” Justin muttered.

“Yeah, well, he’s in the hospital for fuck’s sake, what was I supposed to do?”

“Has Martin come by?” Lorenzo asked, and Katrina shook her head.

“He was picking you up a phone, said he’d be by closer to 6.”

“I like Martin,” Justin said. “He’s a no bullshit kind of guy.”

“And you think I’m a bullshitter.”

“If it makes you feel guilty.”

“Boys, cut it out,” Katrina said as she ran her fingers through her hair. “I’ll check my phone, see if he’s texted again.”

“Thank you.”

“You already have her bending to your will. This is not good. This is never good.”

“Justin—”

“No! No, dude, because I was the one trying to pick up the pieces of my sister after you bailed.”

Katrina turned from them with a heavy sigh as she picked up her phone. There was nothing from Martin, but one simple reply was on her phone.

From Emily.

There’s no way you know the truth. I guarantee he’s lying to you. And I would know all about his lies.

Katrina was still floatingon air the following day after her first official date with Lorenzo. He’d greeted her with a kiss at the bus stop which had Justin yelling at them to get a room, they were grossing him out.
