He let out a sob as he let his head be cradled by her, one that ripped her heart to shreds.

“I promise you,” she whispered, “you’re not broken.”

With another sob that tore from him, he gathered her into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck, and he cried.

“You’re not broken,” she kept telling him, over and over, with no way to know if he believed her.

And when he’d finally agreed to lay down, to rest, she picked the Christmas card up off the floor, closed the door to her bedroom so he could sleep.

Then...only then...would she allow herself the grace to break down in the solace of her living room with the sketches of the bar they’d be working on together in front of her.

CHAPTER 21

“Trina?” Justin enteredher room where Katrina lay beneath her covers, tissue in hand, sobbing. “Is it okay to come in?”

“No.”

“Well, I am anyway.”

It had been three days since Lorenzo had left. Three days with no calls, no texts, and now his phoneline said it was disconnected.

She had no way to find him.

No way to know if he was okay.

He didn’t have any social media accounts for her to check.

“I’m sure he’s fine,” Justin began, but Katrina shook her head.

He’d gotten what he wanted from her.

Then he’d left.

She felt the bed shift as Justin sat beside her with a sigh. “I don’t know what happened. He left me, too.”

“It isn’t the same,” she cried, her teardrops soaking the pillow beneath her.

It wasn’t the same because just the night before she’d laid in his arms believing life couldn’t get any better. Believing him when he said he loved her.

Believing him when he’d said that night was how it should always be.

“Graduation is just a few days away,” Justin continued. “Maybe he’ll show up for that. Or for the exams before.”

“They said he was no longer enrolled,” Katrina replied with a sniffle. “I went to the office.”
