Chance pulls her to the side before I can ask what she is talking about. My other friends all wear similar goofy smiles as they begin to part like the Red Sea as I near the table. When the last of them steps to the side, I understand their reaction.

Behind them, holding a single long stem green rose, dressed in a suit that looks as if it was made for him, stands Hunter.

Back straight, confident smile, and eyes that sparkle, I feel the undeniable pitter patter of my heart that can’t be faked. My breath shortens and all the anger, all the nervousness from a moment ago, dissipates.

“You came?” I whisper.

“I am your plus one,” he says, stepping to me and pulling me into a hug. He smells of expensive imported cologne and I fear that like his biking outfit, he’s blown his budget trying to impress me.

“You didn’t have to…”

“And what? Miss the look on your face right now? It’s priceless.”

I squeeze him hard, not realizing how much I had missed him in such a short period. I take a deep inhale, not wanting to let go but knowing I must. “What a wonderful sight,” I let him know he’s welcomed.

He places a kiss above my ear and whispers a word of warning, “Coming in hot.”

I twist and spot a rapidly approaching Palmer. He’s left Claire six steps behind him, racing toward us like a charging rhino.

A scoff floats over my shoulder from Hunter, he’s unfazed. “Speaking of sights, watch this.” Hunter twists me by my waist back to face him. His lips crash into mine as he bends me backwards at the waist. One hand behind my neck and the other around my waist, he presses forward, his tongue slipping into mine and I lose my mind when my friends burst into applause.

This is happening.

This is what I want.

This is what I need.

This feels real. And right.
