“Aww, Mads, c’mon,” he said, but I shook my head.

“I’m sorry, Brent, but–”

His face changed in an instant. “I knew it.” He sneered, shoving his cock into his boxers and pulling his pants back up.

“What?”

“This is what I said would happen, isn’t it? I should never have given you this second chance, ungrateful omega bitch–”

“I’m leaving,” I said, and went for the door.

He didn’t follow.

In the hallway, I let myself cry, silent sobs for the woman I had been.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-EIGHT

Lucas

“I toldyou that movie was going to be bad–” I was already saying as I swung open the front door, expecting to see Rian and Gray. It was too early for them to be back from their date, but…

“What movie?”

It wasn’t Rian and Gray. It was–

“Madison.”

“Hi.”

I stood, momentarily stunned by her appearance on my front doorstep, embarrassed by my appearance: glasses and unstyled hair, pajamas, ready for a night in. Then I noticed the sour smell of stress marring her perfect vanilla perfume, the bitter sadness in her scent like a worm in a sweet apple. My instincts–my alpha–hated it.

“Come in.”

My concern must have shown on my face, because she hesitated to step over the threshold. “Is that… okay?”

I reached toward her, and when she stepped closer, pulled her into my arms. “Yes, of course it’s okay. You’re okay,” I said, as she went limp against me. “You’re okay.” She let out a shuddering sigh, and I… I bent my knees and lifted her into my arms. She curled into me, her arms around my neck, her nose pressed to my throat, and I carried her bridal style across the threshold, up the stairs and into my room.

“You don’t have to tell me,” I murmured against her hair. I sat down on the edge of the bed with her still half in my lap. “But I’ll listen if you want me to, or–”

“Can I stay here tonight?”

“Yes,” I said, unthinking. “Rian and Gray are out at a movie, but if you want to stay in guest room, you can, or in your–the nest.”

She looked up at me. “Oh–oh, okay. Yeah.”

A long moment passed, in which neither of us seemed to breathe. Our lips were so, so close, her red eyes flickering between my own tired ones.

“Or,” I said, “You could stay here.”

My heartbeat seemed so loud that I was sure she could hear it booming behind my ribs as I waited for her response.

She nodded, and her eyes dropped to my lips.

We would talk about this later–we would have to–but for now…

I kissed her, softly at first, then intensifying, her lips yielding under my own, her arms wrapping tighter around my neck as we fell onto the bed.Mybed, with its crisp white linens smelling like me, like Rian, like pack and home, now held Madison, whose hot mouth was open against mine, whose fingers tangled in my hair, holding me down against her. Whose legs spread around my hips, urging me closer. I could smell the sweetness of her arousal in the air, dizzying, and–

And still that sour smell of fear, of disappointment, of betrayal.
