“She was here.”

“Obviously–Rian may not be able to smell her, but I sure as hell can. What the hell were you thinking?”

“Gray, she showed up at the door, looking like–like she hasn’t slept since Tuesday, smelling like fear, what was I supposed to do, throw her out?”

“Did you fuck her?”

He blushed.

“You did.”

“I did.”

“Did she–is she here, now?”

“No, she…”

“She left. Again.” My heart fell out of my chest as the other alpha nodded. “For fuck’s sake, Luc. What were you thinking?” I scrubbed my hand over my face, then grabbed the bottle of whiskey off the counter, pouring myself a glass and clinking it on Lucas’s before taking a deep swallow.

“Rian can’t know.”

I nodded. “No. He’d be…” I had almost said furious, but that wasn’t the worst thing he’d be. He’d be…

“Sad.”

I nodded again. “Yeah.”

“It won’t happen again.”

But… I grimaced. “You don’t know that. Next time she shows up, sad and lost and looking for comfort… What, you’re going to close the door on her, next time?”

“Yes. No–I don’t know,” he groaned. “Fuck. This wasn’t supposed to be like this.”

“You like her.” I said, and he looked at me, his eyes sad. I didn’t need a bond link to know what he was feeling. “You slept with her, not because she needed you, but because you like her. You won’t turn her away, if she comes back. We both know that.”

He didn’t say anything, just turned back to his whiskey, and I to mine. We sat in silence for a moment.

“What do you want to do?” I asked finally.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re pack alpha. What do we do?”

“About what?”

“About Madison. About you. You like her. About Rian. He likes her, too, you know.”

“Yes, I know,” he snapped. “He’s made it pretty obvious, moping around all week. He’s not sleeping in his bed, you know.”

“He’s been sleeping in the nest,” I grimaced.

“I… don’t know how I feel about that.”

“I think he can smell her–us–in his room.” At the spike in Luc’s scent I hurried to add, “Idon’tthink he could tell, tonight. He would have said. It’s just, her heat…”

He nodded.

“But… he–we–can’t go on like this. We need to do something,” I said. What, I wasn’t sure.
