I love you. I scream the words, but they won’t come out. I can see her mouth moving, I think she’s saying my name, but I can’t be sure.
I love you. Still nothing…
Lucas leaves her and rushes to my side. I want to hit him, yell at him, something, because he should be taking care of her, not me.
“Boss?” He shakes me, dragging my eyes to his. “Hey! Don’t you fucking give up on me, you hear me? We’re going to get out of this.”
Tears form in his eyes, and I want to comfort him, but my body won’t move. Nothing wants to work.
“I…” The single word finally comes out in a weak whisper as blood starts to choke me up and hit the back of my tongue. “I love…”
Lucas leans in closer. “You love her? I know, boss. She loves you too. That’s why you gotta stick this out. You can’t leave her.” His hands cup my face and stare into my eyes. “You have to live, Teddy! Live for her!”
I smile because I know no matter what he says, the decision has already been made. “Take her…” I try to take a deep breath, but it’s hard. I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest. “To the beach…”
“No. No! You’re going to take her, you hear me?” Lucas sobs. “You can’t fucking leave us, you sorry son of a bitch!” He grabs the lapels of my suit and shakes me vigorously.
As much as I want to fight, I can’t. Everything in me is gone. This is it. This is why I needed her to hate me.
I glance toward her again and try and mouth the words instead, but my mind goes blank and everything starts to fade.
As I look into her green eyes one last time as they close, I try to blink, to make sure the memory is filed into my mind, but my eyes won’t open again. Everything goes black and all noise dies.
