“You okay?” he murmured. The connection between them hummed like a tuning fork, trying to find common ground between the two of them. She started to inch forward without realizing why, drawn in by the magnetic pull of the vibrations in the air around them. He got closer too, his lips parting slightly as he prepared to deepen their connection.

“Yeah,” she breathed, unable to force anything else out as the moment swirled around them. Her watch buzzed against her wrist, snapping her back to reality. She blinked up at him for a split-second, and then glanced at the text message on the screen.

URGENT: Your quota is 6,794,001 souls overdue. This quota must be filled immediately. Failure to fully update your quota within 72 hours will result in termination. To manually update your quota, reply UPDATE. To opt out, reply STOP.

“Damn it!” she yelled, pushing her voice as far out of her body as she could. It bounced off the road and immediate surroundings, echoing through the fields on either side of the road.

Death turned to her. “What now?”

Bunny turned, slamming her hands on Morticia’s hood. “Now I have to fill nearly seven million souls within three days, or I’ll be terminated!”

The seriousness on Death’s face was a new level of somber, even for him. “Terminated? They said that?”

“Yeah,” she replied, picking up on his vibe. “Why?”

“Then you need to get to work,” he advised her, his gaze filled with concern. “STAT.”

“I don’t even care at the moment if I lose the stupid job,” Bunny reiterated, tapping into her usual reserve of apathy. “I didn’t even want it in the first place.”

“Termination isn’t just you losing your celestial role,” Death told her. “It means all of your earthly connections will be severed, too. No family, no work, no terrible music, no finding out what happened to your mother.”

The realization hit her, just as he delivered the final punch to her gut.

“No life.”
