“Another.”

She kept on adding pairs and juggling the ones before it until she had about ten on the line. She felt full, as though she would struggle to be able to contain them all for much longer without exploding. Just when she thought she couldn’t take it anymore, she felt Death’s cool hand on top of hers.

“Now, release.”

She did. All the souls went zipping through her—or rather, through the channels she had created inside of her—into their vessels. Her body tensed with the effort, and it wasn’t until the last soul was in place that she took a gasp for air.

“That was something else,” she admitted, slowly opening her eyes as though waking from a heavy slumber.

“That’s what you need to keep practicing,” Death told her, sitting up and perching himself on the edge of the bed. “Add an extra soul or two each time, if you can. At the moment, your capacity isn’t huge, but it’s only because you’re a rookie.”

“Thanks for reminding me,” Bunny told him wryly.

He gave her a curt nod by way of a ‘you’re welcome’ before he reached for his boots.

“Where are you going?”

“I have a quota to fill too, you know,” he reminded her, his tone almost conversational. “I’ll pop back in to check on you and lead you in more inter-dimensional work later.”

“Okay,” Bunny replied. She felt a little let down, though whether it was because of her learning being stalled or the fact that Death was heading off to go about his business in the world, she couldn’t tell. She hated to think it was either. Bunny didn’t bother to sit up and watch him leave. A moment later the room got warmer, and she knew he was gone.
