Page 6 of Cheating Death

“As ready as I’m gonna get,” Bunny said, squatting slightly with her hands held out to either side of her body so she could grab his legs when he was onboard.

She’d known he wasn’t going to be a lightweight, but the downward pressure he created on her hips was intense, and not in a good way. If she hadn’t just had a crash-landing on a stone floor, she probably would have borne up tolerably well. But instead of complaining, she gritted her teeth, grabbed the undersides of his knees, and tried to heft him up a little so it was more comfortable.

Big mistake.

“Grip tighter with your legs or you’re gonna slide down,” she grunted at him, waiting as the inevitable shifting of his weight almost overbalanced her.

“Okay,” he said with way too much cheer. “Go!”

Her knees had locked up under the pressure. Bunny took a deep breath and kicked her right leg out first, stumbling forward into a jolting motion.

“Go!” Death urged again, as though she were a chunky little Shetland pony, and he was urging her to win a prestigious horse race.

National Red Velvet cupcakes.

“I’m… trying…” she gasped, edging them forward and then finally through the portal.

Bunny had been leaning into her task to keep Death on her back while maintaining a forward movement. As soon as his weight left her, she went sprawling forward. The upside was that she managed to get her feet under herself so she didn’t face-plant into the Lobby’s shiny stone floor and smash all her teeth in. The downside was Death was one hundred percent still in the human realm.

“Motherfu—!” she started as she marched back through the portal.

“What happened?” he asked her when she reappeared this time.

“I have no clue—this is bizarre,” Bunny huffed. She was worn out from trying to carry him and worn out from all the events in the lead-up to saving her mom. Having this issue crop up on top of everything else was really the icing on the cake. “I’ve never had this happen before. Maybe something’s wrong with your pass. Can I see it?”

He looked at her blankly. “My pass?”

“Your pendant,” she explained, waiting for it to click. When it didn’t, she shook her head. “Never mind. Here,” she added, reaching for his necklace. Her hands dipped behind the collar of his button-down shirt, feeling for the silver chain she expected to find there.

Instead, all she could feel was the coolness of his skin.

“Oh, shit on a stick,” she said, pulling his collar to the side so she could inspect his neck more thoroughly.

“What?” he asked, backing away from her a little.

“I think I worked out why you can’t get in,” she sighed, letting him evade her grip. A thick smog of fear and understanding enveloped her brain. “I need you to stay right here while I go to the place I wanted to take you.”

“Where else would I want to be?” he replied. A little of his signature sarcasm bled into his tone as he held up his hands, gesturing at the delightful adult incontinence products surrounding them both.

“That’s the spirit,” she tossed back, heading for the portal again. “Be back soon. I hope.”
