Rian’s hands were held upward like I was his goddamn priest or something. He looked up at me earnestly as he shook his head. “What do you mean? We’re family.”

I thought I was going to lose it. Upturn chairs. Smash bottles of ink against the floral wallpaper. Drag down the broken neon sign and hurl it onto the sidewalk. My heart was pounding painfully in my chest and my vision had grey at the edges. I managed to control my breathing enough to speak only four words.

“No, we are not.”

I didn’t stop to see Rian’s reaction as I stormed toward the front door. I already knew what it would be: hurt, disappointment, confusion, fear, concern. It wasn’t like it was the first time I’d been given that look. It certainly wouldn’t be the last.

“Call the school,” was all I said before the door slammed shut behind me.

I was on my motorcycle just as Aurnia turned the corner down the street. I was away, far away into the cold before Aurnia had even a chance of catching a glimpse of me.

A good morning overall. A good fucking morning.
