She seemed surprised when I leaned over and pressed a chaste kiss to her bare cheek.

“What was that for?” she asked.

I shook my head and smiled.

“Are you ready to go?” I asked her instead.

She nodded. “If you are.”

“I’m ready.”

We went together, still together, back down the line of the grave markers unattended by family or loved ones, lovers or friends. It was a sad place. But it was a place that I knew I would return to again. From time to time. To see Shannon. To speak to her. To maybe share things I couldn’t quite yet. To maybe cry for her. For us.

But as Aurnia and I left the gates of the cemetery, I knew I had my present. And I had to live it. I had to move forward. And as I felt Aurnia’s hands wrap around my waist on the back of my motorcycle I knew exactly who my present was. Who I had to live for. Who I was going to move forward with.

I had my sun.

I had my little thief.

My Aurnia.
