“Yeah, Monk.” I glance at Camden who narrows his eyes at me. “He’s the King’s son, isn’t that right, Camden?”

Camden nods tightly. “How did you know?”

“Ruby,” I explain.

“Ruby?” Camden frowns.

“Yeah, she told me. She warned me about Monk. He beats her you know…”

My voice trails off as all four of them stiffen with anger.

“That motherfucker!” Camden growls, heading towards the door as though he’s going to kick the shit out of Monk right this second. Not a good idea.

“Don’t!” I grab Camden’s arm, pulling out of Eastern’s hold. “She’s afraid, and you are not going to do anything that will put your mum in danger, or her. We need to be clever, Camden.”

“That nasty piece of shit!” Ford exclaims.

“He’s been beating Ruby for some time and she’s scared for her life. I have a feeling Mr Burnside and Mr Carmichael have put us into these new groups in part to help me, but also to help her.”

“They know about all this too?”

“Not everything. Not about Monk being the King’s son. But they were there when Crown offered Eastern and me the deal. They know about that.”

“And they were willing to let you screw me over? Fuck man.” Camden sits heavily onto the chair, dropping his head into his hands. I go to him, kneeling before him and grasp his wrists. He looks at me despairingly.

“They don’t like this anymore than I do. I think we need to go to them for help.”

“We don’t need their help,” Ford says. “This isn’t their fight.Grimwill help us. She fucking hates the King just as much as we do.”

Camden stands, pushing against my hand that’s holding him back. “No, she ain’t getting involved!”

“Listen, Cam, I know what you feel about her. I understand that you blame her as much for Sapphire’s death as you do me, but you don’t know everything about what happened that night or why. It’s not as cut and dried as you think. You never gave me a chance to explain.”

“I don’t need no fucking explanation, no excuses. It’s pretty fucking cut and dry to me. She went there to watch you fight. She died because you threw the fight for your damn sister, formoneyto line Grim’s pockets.”

“No, Cam. It’s not as simple as that.”

“This is bullshit!” Camden exclaims, moving towards Ford threateningly.

Eastern steps up blocking him, but it’s Sonny who manages to extinguish the tension that’s about to erupt into another fight.

“It isn’t bullshit, Camden. I know the truth, but I think you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Saturday we’re meeting Grim and she’s going to tell you the full story. You’re going to want to hear it.”

“Fuck you all, and your damn lies. I ain’t going near that bitch.”

Behind us the door opens, and in steps Cal. He looks at us all gravely. “You haven’t got a say in the matter, Camden, becauseyou’re meeting her, whether you want to or not. Mr Carmichael has signed off on the trip. You’re going to speak with Grim and you, my friend, are going to purge your demons once and for all.”
