“Can I ask you something?” I ask.

“Sure.”

“If there was a chance that you could live a happy, safe life outside of Ardelby Castle, would you take it?”

Three glances over at Seven, smiling sadly. “We both know that can’t happen.”

“But if there was a chance, would you leave with Seven?”

“You forget that I’ve lived out there in the real world, and it wasn’t all that good to me.” Three grasps my hand in hers and lets out a small laugh. “Not to mention the fact that none of us are going anywhere. The Masks wouldneverallow it.”

“But what if the Masks didn’t have a choice?” I mutter, knowing that soon they’ll be dead, at least long enough for the Numbers to make their escape should they wish to do so.

“What do you mean?”

“Nothing. Just ignore me. Let’s go over the routine again,” I say, standing and pulling her up with me.

A few minutes later, whilst Three is running through a particularly complicated sequence of steps, I catch Seven looking up from his sheet music. His gaze is focussed solely on her. It’s clear that he loves her very much. It’s also clear that he’s sinking beneath the weight of his self-hatred and that there’s really only one way to fix it. They need a chance to start over again, someplace far away from here, and I know just the person who can help.

Grim.
