“Would it have made me a better man for killing him because of that reason?” he asks me.

“You feel bad about killing him?” I throw back.

He lifts his gaze to meet mine, his green eyes glinting in the light coming from the porch. “I should, but I don’t, and I ain’t sure if that’s because I’ve lost the ability to give a shit about the value of human life after years of fucking taking it at the whim of other men, or if it’s because I really don’t give a shit that he’s dead.”

“He sold drugs to children. You’ve probably saved a few lives by taking him out even if that wasn’t why you killed him.”

“Yeah, until the next man steps in to take his place.”

“I didn’t know you—”

“What, care?” he snorts. “I don’t, not for dirtbags like him. Except…”

“Except?” I prompt, cocking my head to the side as I study his face.

“He had a kid sister, and an aunt.”

“Every bad man has a family,” I say with a shrug even though there’s this tightness in my chest that makes me feel like a victim somehow. Especially when Beast looks at me like that’s exactly what I am. I frown, not liking the feeling.

“I’m well aware of that fact, but his choices aren’t their fault. They loved him regardless, and that’s what I have trouble with. I’ve taken someone they love even if he was a bad man.”

“Then they’re better off without him, right? He’d only bring trouble to their door eventually.”

“Which is why we’ve got them somewhere safe.”

My eyes widen with surprise. “You have?”

“He was working for Saxon, and that guttersnake will have a target on their heads just because they were related to the prick who grassed on him. I won’t have their deaths on my conscience too.”

“Wow. How did you even pull that off?”

“I have my ways. For now, they’re out of Saxon’s reach. Once we take him out, they’ll be safe.”

“I didn’t realise Carter did stuff like that,” I say, completely shocked that my dad would even care about some small-time drug dealer’s family.

“Yeah, your dad’s a good man,” Beast says, giving me a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes.

“Beast?” I question, seeing the lie written boldly across his face, but his phone beeps with a new message and he grabs it from the dash, swiping his finger across the screen, ignoring me.

“Fuck!”

“What?”

“I gotta go. Out you get,” he bites out.

“Is it the little girl?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “No. Something’s going down at Tales. Your dad’s already there.”

“Then I’ll come.”

Beast shakes his head. “No.”

“Beast, it’s my club too.”

“Not yet it ain’t. Get out of the car, Princess.”

“You can’t protect me from this life. This is my future, Beast. I’m coming.”
