“The kind that gets a man’s tongue cut out,” Carter snaps back, unwilling to share, or at least unwilling to share right now.

I flick my gaze to Rodriguez, who’s removing his knuckle dusters and avoiding eye contact with me. Not sure I like the fact he’s stepped into my shoes so fucking easily.I’mCarter’s enforcer after all, the punk can fuck right off if he thinks he can wiggle his way into my fucking role. He’s not the first to try and I doubt he’ll be the last, but he’ll learn pretty fucking quickly where his bread’s buttered and that ain’t at Carter’s side.

“Got it.” I nod, knowing that now is clearly not the time to push the subject given everyone’s being so fucking cagey. “So what did you need me for then?”

Carter makes a snorting sound. “I needed you to bring me Grim.”

“Next time?” I offer, maintaining eye contact with him because if there’s one thing I know for sure about Carter Davidson is that he doesn’t like a pussy, and whilst I might enjoy eating pussy a great deal, I ain’t one.

“There’s no need for a next time…”

The. Fuck. She. Didn’t.

My head snaps around as Kate enters the gym. I open my mouth to tell her to get the fuck out, but slam it shut just as quickly. What the hell does she think she’s doing here?

“Grim!” Carter says, surprise in his voice.

“Carter,” she responds, a tight smile plastered to her face as she nods in greeting to her father and Rodriguez, completely avoiding eye contact with me.

“How did you get here?” I grind out as Saxon gurgles and splutters, trying to speak. An uneasy feeling settles in my stomach as he motions to Kate, as though whatever the fuck he’s trying to say is aimed at her.

Carter flicks his gaze to me, jerking his chin at the fucker. I know what that look means. Without missing a beat, I raise my fist and punch Saxon as hard as I can. He falls to the side, shaking his head as droplets of blood splatter the canvas and our clothes. Kate takes it all in, her eyes dropping to Saxon, then slowly rising upwards to meet my gaze.

“I called a cab,” she replies as calm as fuck.

“You called a fuckingcab?” I reply.

Carter chuckles, a smirk pulling up his lips as he motions for her to join us. “Grim ain’t ready, my arse,” he says, flicking his gaze to me before motioning for her to join us in the cage.

It’s all I can do not to level the cunt.

Iknowshe isn’t ready. Kate is here to prove a point, but it’s the wrong fucking one. This is bravado and bluster. He doesn’t see how her fingers are curled into fists to stop her hands from shaking, or the way she keeps licking her lips and flicking her gaze to the man who’s about to die. She’s fucking terrified. Kate might’ve noticed my tell earlier, but she’s got a few of her own. Glaring at her, I hold back the words I want to say and reach over, grabbing Saxon by the hair pulling him upright.

“What now, boss?”

“Now Grim is going to shoot the bastard thief,” Carter replies, as Kate steps into the cage.

Her step falters, but only briefly. If Carter were paying any kind of attention he would see that she didn’t expect to be the one to kill Saxon. Witness his death, yes. Kill him? No.

Fuck no, according to the glimmer of fear stuttering across her features that she shuts down in the four steps it takes to reach her father’s side.

“Did you get what you needed from him?” she asks, the slightest tremor in her voice only noticeable to those who know her well enough. Either Carter notices and doesn’t give a shit, or he really doesn’t know his own flesh and blood. Right now I’m having a hard time figuring out which is true.

“To a degree,” he answers, holding out the gun to her. “But what I really want is this prick to pay. That will only happen when his brains are splattered across this canvas.”

Grim looks at the proffered gun then back up to Carter who’s watching her closely. This is a test, that much is obvious. Taking someone’s life ain’t easy, no matter how much you psych yourself up to do it. I remember my first kill and despite the dicksplash being a murdering cunt, I will never forget how it felt to see the life leave his eyes. Never.

It changes you, permanently, and there’s no turning back.

“Grim?” Carter questions.

She swallows hard. “I—”

“I’ll do it,” I say quickly. Too quickly, given the way Carter snaps his head around to look at me.

“I said,Grimis going to do it. After all, she’s the one he’s stealing from.”

“I am?” she replies.
