I pushed him away.

“Stop. I’m not going to be the other woman.”

“I don’t want you to be.”

How could he be so cruel?

“Well, then it’s settled,” I said, willing away the burning tears that pricked in the back of my eyes.

I turned around, jiggling the knob again when his hand fell on mine and his body against my back. I stilled, my legs wavering beneath me.

“I broke it off with Francesca.”

I turned around, my curly hair hitting him in the face.

He rubbed his eyes. “Ouch.”

“You deserve that.”

“Did you hear what I said?”

“Yes. So. You know you can’t do that. You two are hitched. A done deal.”

His blue eyes stared down into mine, his hands gently pressing against my forearms.

“I can’t stop thinking about you, Pepper.”

I shivered under his touch.

“It doesn’t matter, Connor,” I said in a strained voice. “You and Francesca…”

“Are done,” he declared.

“I saw you two last night in the elevator. It didn’t look done.” I lifted my chin, squaring my shoulders in his direction.

“I went home with her because I saw Jake with his hands on your ass. I thought you two were together again, and it was like ingesting poison.”

“On the dance floor?”

He nodded, clearly pained by the memory. The same pain I had when I witnessed her all over him in the elevator.

“That’s when I grabbed Francesca and left, hell-bent on getting you out of my system.”

“And did you?”

“I didn’t fuck her. I couldn’t. Nothing could erase the feelings I have for you.”

My arms went slack, awash with relief at his revelation. Anticipation clawed in the depth of my belly. He tilted my chin up, and his eyes melted any resolve I had left.

“I can’t let you be my lost love, Pepper.”

“What…” I barely breathed out.

“I love you, Pepper Little.”

He stroked the curve of my cheekbone, down to my lips, where his thumb lit every sensation in my body. “Tell me you feel the same. Tell me I’m not imagining…”

His gaze lifted from my lips to my eyes.
