I turned to stare outward.

“Why didn’t you bring Jake?”

“He was busy tonight.”

Liar.

I didn’t want him here, not with my head in the clouds.

“I see,” he said in a low voice.

“She’s really something,” I said, turning to him, and he stared at me, his eyes bright blue reflecting the street lamp.

“She is.” He held my gaze to his. What did I expect him to say? No, I’m not marrying her. I miss you?

Fuck, I was so screwed. I cleared my throat. “Well, guess we should get back.”

“Wait.” He reached for my arm. His fingers wrapped around my wrist, and I stilled under his touch, trying to ignore what his touch did to my senses.

“What is it, Connor?”

“I… I think you’re right. Let’s go back,” he said, loosening his grip around my wrist.

I nodded and offered a weak smile, shimmying my hips past him at a hasty pace that I knew he couldn’t keep up with.

What was he going to say?Why did it matter?

I walked back inside, past full tables of the hip restaurant, ignoring the chatter. And was that a wolf whistle?

What the hell?Someone had brushed their hand across my ass. I spun around to find three men, one in particular whose hand was very close to me.

“That is someassetyou got there, girl.”

“What did you just say?”

It was as though a flash appeared. That’s how quick it was. Connor appeared between me and the guy eye-fucking me like I was a ribeye steak.

He gripped the guy’s shirt at the collar. “Don’t you ever fucking touch her again.”

I moved to the side. I could fight my own battles. But Connor’s eyes were like poison, firing lasers into the dickhead who had manhandled me. The two guys on either side were now standing to help their comrade out.

“Chill, man, he was just playing.”

“I don’t give a fuck,” Connor spat, pulling him tighter now. “She is a lady.”

“Wearing that?” the fuckhead said, and I held my breath.

Oh God.

“Connor,no!” I said, but it was too late.

He wielded his hand back and smashed it into the asshole’s nose. A roaring crack sounded, followed by blood.

Gasps and squeals came from everywhere, and as I tried to separate Connor from the guy, I suddenly was pushed back, ending up on the floor. Not one to let a man fight battles for me, I pushed myself up off the floor, but when I stood up, I fell again.

“Ouch,” I yelled out in pain. My ankle burned and ached.

Suddenly, Barrett, Magnus, and Ari surrounded the table.
