“What?”

“I tried to make us work, but the truth is, you’re a boy who only thinks with his dick.”

The model beside me laughed.

Jake flared his nostrils. “I never cheated on you, Pepper.”

“So you say, but you cheat on me every day when you talk to women at the first sign of trouble between us. You’ve done that all throughout our relationship. You betrayed my trust too many times, and we’re done.”

“Wait,” he said, reaching for my arm. “Are you serious, hun?” He appeared shocked and confused.

“You’re a boy, Jake. I need a man.” I gave him a steely look, his mouth slack-jawed.

“Damn girl,” the model said.

I swatted his outstretched hand away and disappeared back into the crowd. My shoulders sat lower, my breath lighter.

Now, where was Connor?

The only area I hadn’t looked at was the entrance. I quickly slid between people and headed that way.

With my heart in my chest and the crowd moving aside, I spotted the broad shoulders and muscular arms I’d memorized.

Connor.

Anticipation flooded me. Only a few more seconds until I told him how I felt. I didn’t care that he was engaged. I knew it was just for show. He didn’t love her. He…

I stopped suddenly, stretching out my hands to balance before falling forward.

He held the hand of Francesca, who was trailing behind him, and as the elevator doors opened, he pulled her inside. I quickly hid behind someone, so he wouldn’t see me. As the doors closed, she threw her hands on him, her body against his as his hands circled her hips.

My heart stopped. He didn’t push her away.

Tears pricked at the backs of my eyes.

I was too late.

“Fuck.” I tripped over something. My shin exploded with a bruising pain sending a throbbing ache up my leg.

I pushed the pain aside, determined to fuck my way out of despair. I was still going to fuck her, especially now that Pepper had clearly decided Jake was the man for her.

“Here’s the light.” Francesca giggled while finding the light switch. The fluorescent light stung my eyes. “You should fire your housekeeper for leaving that there.” she tsked.

“Shh,” I groaned out.

“Yes, sir.”

I released my shin and grabbed her hand, pulling her into the bedroom.

Everything was blurry, hazy. My body ached with pain and frustration. “No!” I pushed aside the feeling of entrapment.

“No, what?” she asked, puzzled.

“Nothing,” I murmured, not realizing I said it out loud.
