He’d made little to no noise. In fact, most of the beings in the cages made no noise. It had been unsettling as if they’d given up on life the moment they entered into the auction house. A chill raced down Jaygen’s spine and he shoved all emotions to the furthest part of his mind.

“Where is he?” Someone exclaimed.

Shit, they were looking for the guy who Porter had choked out for the keys.

“Fuck. We’re behind. That asshole is going to get us in trouble. Get the next item. Mermaid, over there.”

Jaygen glanced over at Amy as she moved next to him. “They will notice that your cage is empty soon. We need to be far away from here by then.”

He nodded but held her back until the footsteps receded. They snuck out of the room. Jaygen made sure to keep Porter facing forward so he wouldn’t keep staring at the occupied cages. They made it out of the auction house and into the alley that ran behind it. The sun had set and the tiger inside of Jaygen wanted nothing more than to break free and run away.

Porter’s hand to his face pulled him from his mental battle with his beast side. He stared into the dark pools of Porter’s eyes and for once found a semblance of control from them.

They made it to the cars and Jaygen stopped short. He glared at Cyrus and the incubus was up and out of the driver seat.

“Thought I’d try,” Cyrus said.

The incubus couldn’t drive. They’d die before they even left the alley. Porter and Amy got into the car as well.

“Where is Foi and Ozni?” Jaygen asked.

Cyrus’s head jerked towards the car in front of them. It was already pulling forward, and he knew instantly it was Arden’s. Jaygen followed Arden’s car until they were back in Silvercross City. But nothing calmed the insanity inside of him. His hand tightened around the wheel as he did his damndest to keep it together.

The leather of the seat clung to his skin as sweat beaded and slid down his back. He itched all over and his gums tingled. It was taking everything inside of Jaygen not to shift, not to lose it.

The tiniest bit of calm settled over Jaygen. A hand appeared in front of him before covering his on the steering wheel. He didn’t even need to look over at Porter; just having the human so close was enough to make his beast think twice about raging.

Jaygen pulled the car into the underground parking lot right next to Arden’s. The car door opened and Cyrus and Amy both got out but Jaygen hadn’t released the steering wheel yet. He should probably go out to Silver Park and shift for a few hours, but the thought of not being with Porter made him nervous.

“Jaygen,” Porter whispered.

“You don’t have to sound so scared around me,” Jaygen said. He turned and looked at Porter, his eyes were red and his face was covered in blood and grime. But even with all of that, the human was breathtakingly beautiful. Jaygen cupped Porter’s face and pulled him close until their foreheads rested against each other.

Thank you.He wanted to utter the words. Jaygen had been ready to lay his life down for Porter and his men, and he still was, but he couldn’t deny the euphoric feeling coursing through him at being with them once again.

“He’s dead,” Porter whispered.

The human didn’t have to clarify who he meant. Jaygen pressed a light kiss to Porter’s lips. “And the other one?”

Porter’s lips tilted in a slight smile. “Ozni and Cy tore him apart.”

A ball in Jaygen’s chest eased and he nodded before pulling back from Porter. “Come on, let’s head up.”

Everyone waited by the back door before they made their way up the stairs into their living section at PGD. Cyrus handed over a sleeping Spooky and Porter cradled the cat.

What in the world was the cat doing there? Jaygen was going to need to have a serious talk with Porter and his obsession with the vermin.

No one said anything for a long while as they made their way up the stairs. The night weighed on each of their minds for different reasons.

“I’ll make sure our tracks are covered in the city,” Arden said, his phone already in hand.

It still surprised Jaygen that the dragon shifter had been there. Yes Arden stuck his neck out for them often, but they’d taken on the mission against the Manetti mafia of their own will, and they’d each known the risks.

Arden nodded to Jaygen as if he already knew what he was thinking. They held each other’s gaze and Jaygen could practically hear Arden asking him if he was okay. He wasn’t, but no one needed to know that.

“Amy,” Porter called.

“Porter, can we talk about everything tomorrow? I’m exhausted,” Amy said.
