“So close,” Micha cried out.

But he didn’t need to worry. Arden ruffled his feathers and stroked along the base of his wings where it met his back and Micha was instantly sent into a spiral of bliss. He shouted as he came undone, decorating both of them in ropes of come.

But he was far from done. Arden continued to thrust inside of him. It took Micha’s brain too long to pick up on the word the dragon was growling as he rutted into him.

“Mine.” Arden looked as far gone as Micha felt. It didn’t take him long to follow behind Micha. The first shot of hot come made Micha cry out as his body responded, tightening around Arden as if wanting nothing more than to drink up every last drop from the dragon.

Even Micha’s body was greedy for Arden’s attention. He moaned as Arden filled him to brim. He could feel the hot sticky come leak from his hole but it only made him clench tighter, trying to keep as much as possible inside of him.

“Shit, Micha. Are you trying to get me started again?”

Micha whimpered in response. He wouldn’t be opposed but he doubted he’d be conscious for it. And he’d be damned if he missed a single second.

Arden slipped out of his body and Micha went limp. Breathing was all he was good for. He was in and out of sleep as a warm cloth rubbed against his sore hole. And then once again when a hot body curled around him.

Micha couldn’t open his eyes; his body was light and heavy all at once. But above all else, he knew he was safe. For the first time in a long time, he could almost hope that he was loved. Or at least he could pretend for now. Arden’s arms wrapped around him and pulled another contented sigh from his kiss swollen lips.

“Sleep, boy.”

Micha mumbled under his breath, his brain not understanding what he was trying to say. Arden’s laughter wrapped around him like a bear hug.

“Stop trying to talk or I'm going to think you have enough energy to go a few more times.”

Micha wished, but there was no way he could even get his pinky toe to twitch. He gave in and his head rested in the nook of Arden’s neck and shoulder. Another chain formed around his neck, but it was so much lighter than the others he bared. This one felt right.

The first nightwas spent resting with Micha. But by the time the next one rolled around, Arden was anxious. He wandered the halls of the palace as if he was transported decades into the past. Arden had been gone for so long, but everything stayed the same. That was how it was with dragons. No one changed quickly when they had centuries to live.

Except for maybe Arden. He gazed up at a portrait of his father and contemplated all the ways that he had changed over the past few weeks. His men had done that, had opened him up to a new world of possibilities. What would you do?he asked the intimidating figure that glared out at him. He looked strong and reliable. But Arden had known all of him, even the sweetest, softest sides.

He missed him. The way his father’s words soothed him and gave him confidence in himself was unmatched. His mother was amazing all on her own, but sometimes he missed his father’s guidance too.

“He was an amazing man.”

Arden felt his mother’s hand on his shoulder and gazed over at her. The sad look on her face tugged at his heartstrings and his heart dropped into his stomach. He’d run away without fully realizing what it was doing to her. All those years with barely any words spoken between them. How hard had it been on her? He’d always known she was a strong woman and he had thought she didn’t need him, but seeing the sorrow in her eyes knocked him right on his ass and he knew that he’d been wrong.

“I shouldn’t have-”

“Don’t,” she cut him off. “It’s in the past. We’ve both said and done some horrible things over the years, but I don’t want to dwell on that anymore. Not tonight.” She gazed up at him. “So let’s talk about more pleasant things. Like those mates of yours.”

Arden groaned. He should have known he couldn’t dance his way around the subject forever. The woman had a way of staying right on course and wouldn’t be swayed.

“I don’t know if that’s what they are,” Arden said.

“I do,” she said matter-of-factly. “It’s obvious to everyone within a ten-mile radius. Except you for some reason.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “It’s not like you to be dense, Ardoneous.”

Arden grunted. He wasn’t being dense, he was being…cautious. Taking on a whole handful of mates was unheard of. And while he had felt the familiar tugs, the tingling that started at the base of his spine and spread every time he was around one of them, he’d denied it. Because it couldn’t be true. Dragons found one mate for life. Not five.

“You want me to get married though,” Arden pointed out, changing the subject. “To some dragon I don’t even know.”

“To further our line and give us a strong leader,” she pointed out. “Someone has to rule and I’m getting old.” She sighed, tucking a strand of white hair behind her dark brown ear. “I want to relax a little, see more of this world than what’s here. And I want our people to grow and flourish again. We’re dying out. That’s not what your father wanted. Or what I want.”

Arden nodded. “I know,” he sighed. “But I don’t know what to tell you. I’m not interested in marrying anyone or having babies. That was never in the cards for me, not after everything I did.” He frowned. “I can’t do it.”

“I know,” she sighed. “Raising children is difficult enough, but with everything that haunts you…”

She trailed off and Arden nodded. When he was younger, he’d been fully prepared to marry and mate and pump out a few dragonlings. But not now. Especially now that his mates were five men who couldn’t carry even if they wanted to. And the thought of raising a child with someone else made goosebumps spread over his body.

“We should at least meet her,” she pointed out.
