“This doesn’t concern you, Deb. Now, step aside.”
“No, you’re not taking her, not again.” Her voice suddenly lowered. “Really, Declan? Haven’t you learned your lesson from the last one? What’s her name, Val?”
“Vicky,” he corrected her.
“Right, her.”
“How… how do you two know each other?” Tara asked, her body still trembling and trying to pull away from Debbie, but her grip was even stronger than Declan’s.
“He’s my brother,” she said, an answer that surprised her. “And a shitty one at that.”
“Give me the girl, Deb,” Declan repeated. “Give me the girl, and no one gets hurt.”
But Debbie shook her head. “Still as stubborn as ever. You really haven’t learned anything from Mom—”
“Mom’s DEAD!” Declan’s face grew bright red, and he charged at Debbie.
Tara winced and closed her eyes, preparing for the blow that would soon occur, but instead, she heard a gun fire, followed by a loud thud on the ground.
When she opened her eyes again, Declan’s body was lying on the ground, with two cops standing behind him.
“H-How’d—”
“I called the cops,” Debbie said, as if reading her mind. “When your friend Ashley came into the club looking for you, I sensed that you’d gone off. He probably drugged you, took you home in a taxi, seduced you. He does it with all the girls. It’s his ritual.”
“Oh my god! Tara! You’re alive!”
Tara heard a female voice scream her name, and when she looked up, she saw Ashley running toward her. She didn’t care that her hair was a tangled mess, and she was wearing nothing but a pizza-stained T-shirt. She couldn’t be happier to see her friend after all this time. She thought she’d die in Declan’s apartment, and no one would even notice.
With her arms wrapped around Ashley, Tara couldn’t help but look over at Declan and the cops. They had him cuffed and restrained, shoving him into one of their cars, head first, before driving away. She knew she should’ve felt a sense of relief, a feeling of safety that the monster was going to now be locked up.
So, why didn’t she?
