Suddenly, it all made sense, why she wanted to spend time with him when they were no longer in the country, why she always disappeared in the middle of the night. He was the other person, the homewrecker.

Declan never spoke to Serena again after she moved out. She packed up all her belongings and moved to the cozy city of Phoenix, Arizona. As for her husband, she left him, the guilt of never being able to stay loyal to him wreaking havoc on her mind, swearing to never hurt another man like she did to him and Declan. But a month after she settled into her new home, there was already another man in her arms.

“That lying bitch,” Declan muttered to himself when his mind returned to the present.

The sound of his ringtone was enough to make anyone turn their head; vulgar slurs and offensive taunts were never someone’s first choice, but for Declan, they were something he could never live without.

“I thought I blocked her,” he whispered quietly when he saw Angela’s name appear on his screen.

He quickly rejected the call and proceeded to swipe up, rhythmically moving through his screens until he found the button he needed… as if he’d done it many times before.

Angela was his most recent hookup, among others. Most of them usually got the hint that he wasn’t interested when he threw their shoes out in the middle of the dead night. But Angela, no, she wasn’t like the others; she was completely clueless. Instead, seeing her shoes on his wet front lawn gave her the message that she needed to go retrieve them, dry them off with Declan’s only clean towel, and climb back into bed with him.

He scoffed. “Clueless. Fucking clueless.”

As he went to put his phone away, another message popped up. This time, from his dating app.

Kaitlyn Starr: Hey, Declan. Checked out your profile. Looking slick. What do ya say we get together some time?

A smile glazed over his face. Kaitlyn was hot, not a perfect ten, but she’d do.

Declan Hayes: Grab a drink? Twenty minutes, club on 22nd. Be there.

He closed his message with a wink before sending it off, shoving his phone back into his pocket and heading over. He didn’t even bother to check whether she was on board. He never did. If she showed, great. If not, then he was sure he could find another warm body to spend the night with.
