I drop my forehead down against hers, “I want you, but I cannot come inside of you. I do not have birth control.”

“I’m not on any birth control either.”

“If I take you, you are mine. If you become pregnant you will be my bound and right now we are two beings who just met. I am not in a position to start a relationship because I do not even know if I am imprisoned here forever or if I am free. My health and my future are at risk. I cannot be a partner to anyone.”

“I’m going to fix this,” she says fiercely. “I’m going to free you from this, Skogg.”

I pull her down next to me and hold her close in bed like I did last night. We lie next to each other and talk for hours. I discover her favorite color. I tell her my favorite type of fire-ale. And I explain and demonstrate how I can flash-flame. She tells me about her childhood on New Earth and I tell her of my sisters and my mother.

“When you wake up again in the morning I will be gone,” I remind her. “At dawn I phase out and become invisible to outside eyes. I cannot speak to you, or even cause anything to move in order to communicate with you. I am there, but you can’t see me or hear me.”

“Were you here this morning?” she yawns.

“I was with you all day.”

“Oh, that’s right.” Her eyes are growing heavy, as are mine. I rest my chin on top of her head.

“Tomorrow night I will give you a personal tour of this castle and I will tell you more. Meanwhile, sleep, human. You need the rest, as do I.”

And then we both fall asleep in each other’s arms, as we did the night before.

Iwake up the next morning, alone again.

But this time I understand that Skogg’s body is phased out and he’s invisible to me, stuck in his netherworld where he can’t communicate. It must be terrible for him to have no control over this. I’m certain he’s nearby and in fact probably watching me.

“Good morning,” I say brightly. Then I stand next to the bed, stretch and bend and strip down to my underwear, for his benefit. I thrust my chest out because I know he loves my breasts. Then I strut into the bathroom, making sure to sway my hips and shut the door behind me.

I’m going to get this man free of his “curse” if it’s the last thing I do.

Other women of my species would think Skogg is a man to run away from, but I want to runtohim. He’s a secret treasure I’ve unearthed. In the short time I’ve spent with Skogg Blackstone I can sense his loyalty, his honor and his dependability.

And he loves my body despite the fact that I’m obviously overweight with a poochy stomach and wide hips. Most other males think I’m too thick and this is something to be avoided but not Skogg. He thinks I’m frail and he desperately wants me as his pleasure mate.

And I think he’s sexy as hell.

Yeah, he’s got dagger-like fangs and two black horns that protrude from his head, right at the top of his forehead. His skin is deep red, and he flash-flames. But his black eyes glitter with lust and appreciation when he eyes my body. I don’t mind his huge, black barbed tail and the silver claws at the tips of his fingers and toes. And his kisses take my breath away. His cock is certainly bigger than anything I’ve ever encountered before. He puts his hands on my waist and pulls me into his arms like I’m delicate and petite.

And I’ve studied the Hyrrokin species, so I know they mate for life. If Skogg ever becomes more to me than a boyfriend—if our relationship ever progresses and he becomes my husband, or “bound” as he calls it, then he will be devoted to me for life. He won’t cheat, and this is important to me.

I step back out of the bathroom, cleansed and dressed for the day. And I chat with him like I did yesterday, as if he’s standing right next to me. I tell him about my plans for the day. He said the sound of voices talking makes him feel better, so…and this time I know he can understand what I’m saying.

Tonight, we’re going down to that mysterious basement and I’m going to get to the bottom of this and find out how to free this man.

Meanwhile, I make my way downstairs, eating the fruit Skogg left for me on the table in the great hall, when I hear a knock on the front door.

“That’s weird,” I say out loud for Skogg’s benefit. “No one should be able to get past the front gates. I was about to go out and give everyone their morning update. I told them yesterday to not try and enter the estate, but to wait for me at the gate.”

I walk over and open the heavy front door and two Creekan females yell out. “Surprise!”

My lips form a hard, thin line as I frown at these females on my doorstep. I know who they are. “Ghost Hunters,” I mutter, like it’s a curse word.

“Nice to see you too,” the first one proclaims. “We’re here to livestream an episode. We booked this place months ago.”

Lies. All lies. “I told you no,” I hiss.
