I stare at him, processing this news.

“Bring the both of them here, to the monastery. We can all hunker down and fight off our enemies together. Lorelei will be pleased to have another human nearby.”

“I think this is a good plan. I’ve been studying this monastery and its placement here in the mountains and it’s a good place to make a stand. And Cabal, we will make a stand. I have not arrived to lead my enemies here and cause you harm. I am here to make sure all of you are safe. The Hurlians trained me well, and I will use all of my abilities to keep you and your family safe.”

“Thank you,” he answers. “I am happy you are here, no matter the reason. I am just glad to have my brother back.”

I finally ask the most difficult question. “And what of our Father…?”

Cabal shakes his head. “I do not see or speak to him. He committed treason and has never confessed or apologized for his many crimes. He continues to lie and claim his innocence despite overwhelming evidence, even from his jail cell. He blames and projects his own faults onto others.”

I suspected this, so at least I’m prepared to hear this bad news. “It is only you and I then?”

“Yes. The two of us, and our females and your daughter. You are not alone. I will not allow anyone to take my brother from me again.”

I turn my head and gaze out the window, keeping back the tears that burn behind my eyes.
