“Who is that?” the head peacekeeper tries to shout over the windstorm.

“I don’t know,” I raise my voice and yell back, with all honesty.

Then I race inside, unclip Lyla and snatch her into my arms. I run back out and stand alongside the Gravians on the edge of my yard, watching with fascination as the hovercraft lands in the open field.

Who is it?

The ramp lowers and we all gawk as Isak pounds down the ramp. I shake my head. Apparently, we’re no longer in hiding? I had no idea this man was renting a hovercraft for our move. This is where the fact that he was essentially raised in isolation and not used to communicating with others, is becoming obvious. Little things like “hovercraft” are important for a man to tell his new girlfriend.

The peacekeepers start freaking out. Gravians are strong, but they are also superstitious and easily frightened of anything that appears “scary”. Two of them scream and run away. The other two stand their ground but look terrified.

I should have more sympathy, considering I fainted when I first met him, but I can’t help but quietly chuckle at their overreaction. How quickly my views of Isak have changed, in such a short time.

“He’s not here to harm you,” I try to say. “He’s not a red devil. He’s a Hyrrokin with wings.”

Isak boldly walks right up the head peacekeeper and introduces himself. What’s crazy is that in minutes he’s charmed the formerly frightened peacekeepers, the other two come back, and even my neighbors are here in the front yard too.

And suddenly he’s talked them all into helping us move all my things out of my domicile and into the cargo area of the hovercraft he rented. I stand in the yard, holding Lyla in my arms, watching all of this play out in amazement. Apparently, his communication skills are better than I assumed.

“I’m sorry about how I called the peacekeepers but I sincerely thought you were in danger,” my neighbor whispers to me later as she helps me pack up my kitchen. “I thought he was here to harm you; I didn’t realize he was your new husband. Why didn’t you tell anyone you’d gotten married?”

I glance out the window at Isak, who is still outside talking to the peacekeepers. What is he telling everyone about us?

Finally, the three of us settle into the hovercraft, and I wave goodbye to the crowd that’s standing out front, waving us off and wishing us well. The ramp closes and we fly off. I sit Lyla up in my lap and hold onto her tiny hands, helping her enjoy the fun of a hovercraft flight too.

Finally, we’re alone and Isak has us on autopilot. “Why does everyone think we’re married?” I immediately ask.

“Because it’s true. I am your mate. You are my bound.”

“It’s true that I said I was coming here with you, and we had sex last night,” I can’t help the flush of heat that spreads across my cheeks as I remember all that we did in the bed, again and again. “But you didn’t ask me to marry you.” Although if he did ask, I’d certainly say yes.

“Female, I gave you my seed. I can already scent the change in you. You carry my offspring. This means we are legally mated.”

“What?” I place a hand over my stomach. “Are you saying…?”

“Yes, you are pregnant with my child. I told you I was going to breed you and I did.”

“Already? We just had sex last night for the first time. How is that possible? I didn’t realize it would happen so fast.”

His chest literally puffs with pride. “Hyrrokin males are potent.”

“Obviously. Will our baby have wings too?”

“No, only Lyla and I will ever have wings. Mine were grafted on and they made her an exact clone of me, right down to my additional wings. But our infant will be half-Hyrrokin and half-human.”

He moves to sit next to me for a moment and wrap an arm around me as well as his wing. I lean into him and rest my head on his shoulder. I love the three of us like this, together. And now there will be four of us. I want to wallow in the fact that I just found out I’m going to be a mother, but the most important thing right now is that I’m on my way to Westmore monastery.

“So, what does your brother do at this monastery?” I ask. “Is he the cook? Is he in charge of the grounds?”

“No, he’s the High Priest of Westmore.”

I sit up straight and meet his gaze. “Y…your brother is a High Priest?”

Isak shrugs like it’s nothing.

“Isak, that’s a really big deal. Only the most devout and noble beings in the four sectors are given those types of positions.”

A ridge crooks over his eye.
