I place the feather in a place where Lyla and I can constantly look at it, on the Traq table.

He was here, but now he’s gone.

I feed Lyla another bottle and I again do research on what species these two could possibly be. I think he’s a Hyrrokin and so is this baby. But on the other hand, the Hyrrokin do not have white wings. And um, these adult Hyrrokin look scary as hell. They all literally look like the devil from my darkest nightmare. I glance down at Lyla, who’s resting in my lap, drinking her formula from the bottle I’m lightly holding for her. Why would these two have wings when no one else in their species has wings? Is he a Cyborg Hyrrokin? No, that can’t be because then his baby would have implants too and it looks to me like she was born with those wings.

It’s a complete mystery.

Later, I’m in the bedroom with Lyla, changing her stinky diaper yet again for what seems like the thousandth time, but the good news is I’m getting better at this. And that’s when I hear a knock on the front door.

I suck in a sharp breath and place Lyla in her crib. “Sssh. You hide here, and I’ll check on what’s happening. Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.” I close her bedroom door behind me, praying she’ll remain quiet. I race up the hallway and use the peephole on the front door again and see no one on the porch, which makes me assume this must be Lyla’s dad? I gingerly open the door and find two items resting on my porch: a pink bouncer and a flower print nursing pillow.

Damn, he’s fast.

A squeal of delight escapes my lips and I clap my hands. “Thank you,” I yell out, hoping he can hear me. “Thank you very much.”

And then I bring both of our new “toys” inside and shut the door behind me.

The restof the afternoon and evening go by in a haze of feedings, diaper changes and spit ups, as well as a bath for Lyla in the kitchen sink. There’s so much laundry to be done than I would ever think possible. I go to bed that night, exhausted. Lyla sleeps next to me again in her basket on my bed. I’m probably being overly cautious, but I need her next to me this first night in order to sleep.

I followed three different vid channels today of mothers giving tips for how to care for their babies and I’ve eagerly watched at least a dozen vids on how to change diapers, feed babies, play with babies, bathe them and even how to get them to sleep at night and get them on a schedule. It’s a lot, but I’m determined to implement all I’ve learned.

Tomorrow is a new day.

The next morning, I put Lyla in her new bouncer and then I move to putter around the kitchen and get her bottle and my Traq. We’re both in our pjs, but I changed her diaper already so at least she’s fresh and comfortable.

I’ve learned I like to have my morning Traq and give her a bottle before I move onto getting us both cleaned and dressed for the day. I programmed the Traq brewer and the food dispenser before I went to bed last night, so all we need is ready. I smile because I feel like I’m already getting a handle on this “mothering”.

Maybe I should turn on some music? I want to take a moment first to…and I turn around and he’s there, taking up all the available space.

My heart stutters in my chest.

I look up.

A giant, red-skinned male with tall black horns and silver claws stands in front of me. A menacing, nightmare vision of a satanic-looking creature. Smoke wafts from his nostrils and sharp fangs are exposed past his black lips. He hisses at me with a forked tongue.

I scream and everything goes blissfully dark.
