Her jaw drops and she stares at me accusingly. “You’re best friends with the heir to the entire Hyrrokin mafia of Tarvos?”

“Heh, not that it helped one bit in getting me out of prison. Where were you while I spent a year rotting in that hell hole on 149?”

Prince puts his claws up. “You’re the one who got arrested in intergalactic space. Also, I knew your cousin was on the case, so I let him take lead.” He slaps me on the shoulder, “It's good to see you back.”

Aliyah purses her lips. “Kryel, you said you weren’t part of the mafia.”

“I’m not.” I take her hand in mine. “Yes, this male is my best friend since childhood, but I’ve never been fully part of his fucked-up family.”

Prince throws back his head and laughs. “Not for lack of trying on the Don’s part. Dad ordered me again to ask you to enter the fold. He’s tired of contracting you out for jobs off planet and thinks you’ll want to resettle with us now that you’re out of prison.”

Aliyah pounds a fist against the table. “Kryel isnotbecoming part of your mafia,” she grits out. “He’s going to get his name cleared and go legit so he can be seen with me on the vid channels.”

I lean back and smile, “What she said.”

“Heh. I have good news for the both of you. I recently ascertained that your twin sister, Jada Williams is not ‘the one’ either.”

My female sits up straight. “Really? You scented my sister. How is that possible?”

“Yes. And I didn't spend very much time with her on Tarvos, but I do know that she is safe and in good hands. She’s living with your cousin, Ariana Strikestone. I promised her that instead of sending you to your father that I would give you the opportunity if you weren't the one to decide what you wanted to do.”

“And what would you have done if you’d scented her and found she was the one?” I growl at him. “She stays with me.”

“Obviously.”

We have a stare off for a moment.

Then Aliyah asks another question, “So, what you're telling me is that you're on a search for a human female you once scented and all you know about her is that piece of fabric? And you have her scent?”

“Yes.”

“We’ve been looking but there aren’t that many unmated human females on Tarvos,” Rojer explains.

“It’s been a difficult quest,” Jak agrees.

“It sounds romantic but actually very tricky,” Aliyah agrees. “Maybe you should hire Molten Lava to help.”

We all laugh heartily at this statement.

My female tries to cover her face, but I give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek and she rejoins in on our joviality.

“Another round of fire ale,” Jak shouts to a hostess.

Our drinks soon arrive and we all do a toast, “To Molten Lava,” we shout and laugh again, then chug down our fire ale.

Aliyah listens intently as the four of us swap stories of our time in jail. Prince has been in prison for a few brief stays. Jak recounts his two-year stint in a Tarvos maximum security prison, and Rojer once did six months in military prison. They all agree I got the shittiest stay at 149, especially since I wasn’t even guilty.

“My father, thinks your father, the head of New Earth mafia, is a pretender and an asshole,” Prince tells Aliyah. And immediately they start chatting and all is forgiven. My best friend and my future bound suddenly become fast friends.

Suddenly the small screen on my wrist flashes red, alerting me to the fact that our evening is over. I wipe fire foam off my face with the back of my claw. “Time for us to go. The security in the club and on our path out is about to return back online in twenty minutes.”

“Sounds like it’s time for us to leave too,” Prince says.

The five of us stand. Prince leave currency chips on the table and we all step out of the booth.

My best friend shakes my claw and pulls me in for a tight half hug. “I expect an invitation,” he says against my ear.

“To what?”
