I choked on my own laughter. Now it was their turn to watch me with irritated gazes as I howled. With herculean effort I managed to speak, “Oh yes, she is definitely the cure!” It took several more minutes for me to pull myself together.

“Care to elaborate, Doctor?” Eason raised his brow, impatience showing in his squinted eyes.

“Yes, yes,” I said, collecting myself. “Okay, it sounds like she can control her venom. Based on Kye’s symptoms, her venom acted as an aphrodisiac. Maybe a smaller dose has these effects, while a larger dose is lethal. I would need to study that more to be sure. However, what we do know is that it worked as a sexual stimulant in Kye. He was experiencing health issues, until they completed copulation––”

“Did he just say ‘copulation?’” Kye’s eyes were wide, and his mouth hung open in horror.

“Do you prefer coitus?” I queried.

Eason snorted.

“Coupling? Intercourse? Fornicati––”

Storm broke in. “Sex. You are saying that she injected him with a stimulant to ensure he would perform. What would be the point? Maybe she needed a male to procreate?”

Kye looked faint, his skin turning a sickly green shade.

Eason’s eyes glinted in humor. “Did you hear that, Kye? She basically gave you the mermaid’s version of a little blue pill.”

“It wasn’t like that!” Kye cried. “I was already aroused before she bit me, and I came onto her first. We both wanted it and consented to it verbally.” He paused and rubbed his eyes.

“Fynn may be right about its affects, though,” he confessed. “It didn’t force me to be aroused, but it definitely enhanced our lovemaking.”

“It would be very interesting to study the effects in person,” I added.

All three guys guffawed. My cheeks grew warm from embarrassment.

“Purely for science! I didn’t mean it like that!”

They snickered and elbowed each other like they were thirteen years old instead of in their twenties and early thirties.

“Fine, it sounded weird,” I conceded. “From what Kye said, the flu-like symptoms of the toxin eased, but didn’t cease completely. That might be why he’s still shaky.” I sighed and turned to Kye. “I wish we had a sample to study. We still don’t know why your injuries healed, or how she gave you an intricate tattoo in minutes. If I weren’t looking at the evidence, I wouldn’t believe it. I wish we could read that language. Maybe I could send some photos to my friends and see if they recognize the script.”

“I want to see it, is there a mirror?” Kye glanced around the room. Flicking the blanket off his body he prepared to stand.

“Stay in bed!” I barked. Moving toward him, I pulled out my cell phone and snapped a photo. I handed him the phone, watching his face as he zoomed in on the script. He unconsciously moved his mouth as he studied the photograph. Color drained from his face and the phone trembled in his hand.

“What is it? Why do you look like someone died?” Storm asked what we were all wondering.

Kye moved his hand up and rubbed the tattoo. When he finally met our eyes, I saw the tears in his own. “We bonded, and I left her.”

“Bonded? What does that mean?”

My stomach dropped. Eason may not understand, but I believed I knew what Kye was saying. “Are you sure?”I asked him.

“Yes.” His voice was barely a whisper. “I can’t read the words, but somehow I know what they symbolize. She asked, and I agreed. I believed it was a dream. The thing is, even if I had known it was real, I still would have said yes. I can’t explain it because it doesn’t make sense. But I knew she was mine and I was hers. Nothing else mattered.”

“Is someone going to explain what on earth he’s talking about?”Eason asked.

I turned to face Eason.

“I’m guessing there’s a lot more at play here judging by her effect on him and the magical tattoos,” I said. “But the short answer is, he got married tonight, got his rocks off, and then ditched his new bride.”
