I had never taken a willing victim, not in all my time on earth, and my hesitation must have been written on my face.

“Zosime, you know your job, and I know that I cannot fight the evil inside of me forever.” Yashy looked at me with pleading eyes. “Please, I’m tired.”

“I will make it quick. If I knew of a cure––”

“We both know this isn’t your everyday kind of bad vibe. I’m sure you know more about it than me, but I can feel it consuming me like a plague. This is a curse, and it isn’t human.”

She had no idea how correct she was. It wasn’t human, it was created with the magik of an Ancient. I thought of how many from the human population were now contaminated, and it distressed me. Was I the only one left of the Promised? Had anyone been working on a cure to combat the Lure?

I was yanked from the thoughts as Yashy plunged into the water next to me. I caught her arm and held her head above water.

“Let’s go for a swim, mermaid!” She continued to laugh as my fangs descended. We slowly sank beneath the sea, the cool water a contrast to the fiery rage that burned inside me.

In another life, I’d have liked having this tiny warrior female as my friend. Yet one more thing this cruel world had stolen from me.

Also, what is a mermaid?
