“I forgot how much getting shot hurts.” I tried to make a joke, but it came out as a wheeze.

“Shut up, idiot. Why on earth did you jump in front of me?” Storm sounded angry.

“Dang. I didn’t realize still being alive would make you so angry. This is the last time I save your life.” The pain disappeared as a coldness crept through my body. I sighed in relief, but it turned to a cough. Something wet was on my lips.

Storm began cursing. I admired his creativity. I hadn’t heard most of those words before. It was rare for our calm leader to curse at all. I opened my mouth to make a joke, but only a sucking sound came out. I knew I should be panicking. Instead, I felt relaxed. A nap sounded nice.

Eason groaned, and then the floor shook as something hit it—hard.

I wanted to ask if Eason was alive, but my muscles refused to obey me. My eyelids drooped.

“They hit him with a tranquilizer dart. There are too many of them, Kye. I can’t get us out of this.” Sadness dripped from each word. I wanted to tell him it was okay, and it wasn’t his fault, but my body no longer obeyed my commands.

A slick, warm liquid was pooling under my motionless fingers. It didn’t take a genius to understand I was bleeding out.

I was dying.

A dart whistled through the air, embedding itself in Storm’s shoulder. It must have been a doozy of a tranq, because he collapsed on top of me almost instantly.

These men better hope Zosime never finds them. I was just upset I wouldn’t get to see it.

Itossed and turned on the yacht’s giant bed. Fynn had asked Lokene to teleport him to his home office. He had several friends involved in earthquake research, and he wanted to ask them some questions regarding tsunami risks.

Eason, Kye, and Storm had left at dawn to assist in the arrest of Richard Jack. They weren’t expected to be back until the following day. Zeno had returned to Atlantis to check on his sister and make sure she hadn’t eloped with the young merman Zeno disliked.

Family drama was not something I was prepared to deal with, so I opted to remain on the yacht and wait. The problem with my plan? I wasn’t a ‘wait at home’ type of woman. I was more of a ‘lead the charge into battle’ woman.

I was bored out of my mind and had been uneasy all morning. Were they all okay? They were too far away for me to sense them, and I was struggling to handle the separation from all my mates at once.

Lokene blinked into the room, flopping onto the bed beside me. Without missing a beat, he pulled me into his arms. His lips captured mine in a kiss that made me lightheaded. I was wearing the same outfit as the night before, and I shivered as his fingers found the slit in my pants and brushed along my bare skin.

I was not about to miss this opportunity to do some heavy petting of my own. I found the hem of his T-shirt and pushed it up. My breath caught. I had grown up around Atlantean soldiers, all of whom were in perfect shape… But Lokene was perfection.

The man didn’t have a six-pack. Oh, no. He had a twelve-pack. I traced my finger along the chiseled edges of his muscles. He was built like an ancient god, no pun intended.

Lokene snickered.

I scowled at him for reading my thoughts. “I know it has been a long time, and perhaps my memory is mistaken, but I do not remember you looking like this back then.”

“I’ve had a lot of time on my hands while I waited for you to wake up, Sleeping Beauty.” Lokene kissed the tip of my nose.

“Can’t you just make abs appear?” I thought the Ancients’ power was pretty much limitless.

He laughed. “Actually, we can’t change our physical bodies. We can change the bodies of others to some extent, and we can change things around us, but we cannot change ourselves. Do you really think any of the Ancients would be fat and bald if they could change it with a simple thought?”

“How strange. Although, perhaps there is some beauty in the fact that even Ancients must learn to be content with themselves.”

“Very true, Soyale.” His hands moved down my back, pressing me against him.

“How am I able to shift between my human and Siren forms? If I am part Ancient, I shouldn’t be able to do that.” The more I learned about the Ancients, the more confusing their many rules and limitations seemed.

“Have you forgotten your heritage and gifts, my love? You have powers from the Ancient realm and magik from the earth. The Siren is now an equal part of what you are. You aren’t changing into a form that doesn’t belong to you; rather, you are shifting into a form that is just as much a part of you as the human form. No one knows exactly what abilities you may possess.” As he spoke, his hands continued to caress my body.

My fangs ached with the desire to mark him. Tartarus! I scrambled backward, nearly falling off the bed.

He sat up quickly, confusion clouding his features. “What’s wrong, Zosime?”

“I nearly lost control.” I held my bottom lip between my teeth. The Siren was tired of waiting for this man. She wanted me to jump him and ride him like a surfer riding a wave.
