“Oh, Lokene. Please.” Great. I couldn’t even piece together a coherent sentence.

Lokene murmured something against my neck, but I couldn’t make sense of the words. He lifted his body away from mine, and I felt cold at the sudden loss of his body’s heat. “Soyale. When we bond, it will change things in our family.”

My brain struggled to concentrate. “What do you mean? Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because it had to be now. You had to bond with your other mates first. I had to be last.” His face showed signs of strain. He was fighting against my venom’s demands. “I’m an Ancient. When we bond, my power is going to surge through the bond.”

My heart lurched. “Will your power injure the guys?”

“No, it shouldn’t.” He sighed. “I don’t think it will. We are in uncharted territory, Zosime. I don’t know an Ancient who bonded with a human harem, and no Ancient has ever bonded with merpeople.”

His glowing eyes met mine. “Nor has an Ancient bonded with a Siren.”

“Then how do you know your power is going to surge through the bond?” I demanded, my voice rising.

“I don’t know for sure. All I know for sure is that when two Ancients bond, they share power, and it binds them together. It is logical that anyone you have bonded with will also be part of our binding through you.”

That seemed logical. “How do we know it won’t hurt them?”

“It won’t.” He closed his eyes. When he opened them, there was desperation. Had my venom done that? “We are out of time, Soyale. We must claim each other now. Say yes. Tell me you want me, that I am yours forever.”

“Yes. You belong to me, Ancient.” My voice no longer trembled. It came out as a husky purr meant to excite him more. It worked.

He lined himself up with my slick heat and slowly pushed himself inside me, feeling me until I gasped for breath. I clawed at his chest and arms, wanting more of the exquisite pain.

He thrust into me hard and fast, taking me and making sure I knew who was in control, and I let him believe that was true.

“I love you, Lokene.” I clung to his sweat-soaked body. Once more, I sank my fangs into him. This time claiming him as mine.

“You are mine, Soyale. I knew it from the moment I laid eyes on you. I will never let you go again.” He placed his right hand over my heart and growled, the sound vibrating through both our bodies. Bodies that were… glowing?

I glanced down the length of our bodies, wondering if I had accidentally shifted into my Siren form, but no, I still appeared human… Except for the glowing tattoos that swirled on my skin. They flickered with the same aquamarine light that I was used to seeing from my scales.

“Our power is responding to each other. The binding has begun.” His hips moved faster, sending us flying toward our release.

The exchange of Ancient power called to my earth magik, and the turquoise energy washed over my body like water.

My body felt like it had been set on fire, inside and out. I needed a release of energy and of desire. “Hurry,” I whimpered against his neck.

He didn’t reply, but he tilted his hips in such a way that his erection rubbed against me in all the right ways. I felt the release coming only seconds before we came together. I couldn’t scream his name. I couldn’t even breathe.

White-hot energy exploded in the room, blinding me momentarily, as the power that had been building up released. Relief and contentment wrapped around me like the world’s softest blanket.

That one moment of perfection was shattered as I was sucked into a vision. Thousands of short clips played in front of me. The same event playing out a thousand different ways.

I saw miners destroy the world from their greed. Then the vision reset, and I saw weapons made from Orpati decimate earth. Again, the vision reset, and I saw all of humanity tainted by the Lure. Over and over, I watched humanity come to its end. There were thousands of ways the world might end, but I saw only one that might save humanity. Was this just a dream? Or was I being shown what I must do?

I tried to shake myself free of the nightmarish images and finally succeeded, only to be drawn into a vision of Kye where I looked through Kye’s eyes.

Storm hadn’t seen the second guard come through the corridor on the opposite side of the bow. This guard had a semi-automatic rifle, and he aimed it at Storm’s head, pulling the trigger.

I yelled a warning but knew it would be too late. Lunging toward the guard, I threw myself in the path of the bullets. My body jerked as the first two slammed into my torso.

“Kye!” Eason and Storm yelled my name in unison. My shoulder hit the wooden floor of the yacht with a sickening crack. Excruciating pain burned through my body like a wildfire.

“Try not to kill them! I want to get some information from them first!” Richard jumped from his seat and ran for cover inside the boat.

A slick, warm liquid was pooling under my motionless fingers. It didn’t take a genius to understand I was bleeding out.
