“I’m sorry you can’t go home,” I whispered.

Lokene’s deep laughter had my toes curling. “Soyale, my home is here on Earth with you. I never wanted to return to Iolatara again. And now they can’t yank me there whenever they want me to play messenger boy.”

I looked at the faces of my mates, still unable to believe it was all truly over. We were alive, and it was time to start our lives together.

I couldn’t help but glance back at the shore. There was something I wanted to try, but I didn’t want anyone to watch in case I failed. “Bion, Lokene, please take everyone to the boat. I’ll be there in a minute.”

The men hesitated, but at my shooing, they teleported away, leaving me alone.

I blinked to shore and kneeled by the stone statue of the brave merman. It didn’t seem right that I was going home to my mates, and he was not.

I pressed my hands to the merman’s chest. The stone was cold beneath my palms, but it quickly heated and burned my skin as I pushed my magik into it. The statue remained unchanged, but I refused to give up.

Imagining my magik blending together, I blasted it into the stone. This would either work, or it would shatter the stone into a million pieces. I closed my eyes and turned my head away, not eager to be hit in the face by flying debris.

“Ouch! Queen Zosime? What are you doing?”

I screamed, falling backward at the sound of the male voice. My eyes shot open, and I saw a concerned merman watching me. He was okay. With a sob, I smothered the very confused mer in a hug.

After blinking him home, I thought about my beautiful boat home and the men who waited for me there. Heat warmed my belly, and for the first time, I felt truly happy. It was my turn to experience the joys of this incredible life.
