‘Yes, well. You did.’

‘So, how was your date?’

‘Umm, good. Don’t let me hold you up.’ Turning around, she unlocked the door and held it open for him.

‘Thanks. See you tomorrow then.’

‘Bye.’ She watched as he left, an empty paint tray under his arm.

Chapter Seven

‘So, go on then. Howwas your date with Benjamin last night? Is he the one?’ Diane emptied another bag of change into the till.

‘Sadly not. To be honest, it was awful. He was so materialistic. Every time he spoke, it was to brag about what he had or where he was going. I had to make up something about helping Elsie with something just to get away from him.’ Brooke sighed as she leaned against the counter, her back to the empty bakery. ‘He most definitely wasn’t the one. Not the one for me, anyway.’

‘Sorry to hear that. The dating game can be so harsh. You’ll find someone.’ Diane scrunched up the empty bags and turned, leaning against the counter.

‘Umm, I’m not sure. My gran always used to say there was someone for everyone and that he’d come along when I was least expecting it but I’ve tried that. I’ve tried not looking, staying off the dating apps and nothing. But then I’ve tried the dating apps, and that’s not especially going very well either. Maybe I’m just a lost cause.’

‘Don’t say that.’

‘It’s difficult not to feel that way sometimes.’ What else was she supposed to try? She’d always believed her gran, though. Even after break-up after break-up, she’d started again. Started dating, she’d even let two colleagues set her up on blind dates with their friends. She shuddered. ‘I don’t know. Maybe it’s time to just give up on the whole thing and accept that maybe there isn’t someone out there for me.’

‘Are you two ready? If so, I’ll open up.’ Teresa walked towards the front door to the bakery.

‘Yep, we’re ready.’ Diane turned towards Brooke again. ‘Are you talking to anyone else on those apps?’

‘One person. He seems nice, but then I thought Benjamin sounded nice over messages.’ Why couldn’t she pick up on these things, these clues that suggest what a person is like? Other people seemed to.

‘Why don’t you arrange a date with him and then if it doesn’t work, give yourself a bit of a break for a while?’

Brooke nodded. ‘I just thought the change of location would be the answer, but I guess it’s not and I’m only going to make myself miserable.’

‘Arrange a date with this new bloke, then come off of them for a while. Enjoy your time here in the bay.’

‘What’s this? I thought you said your date went well yesterday?’
