‘THANKS FOR COMING WITHme.’ Taking Max’s hand, Brooke stepped up onto the causeway, the dinosaur safely in her grasp.

‘No worries. Any excuse to spend some alone time with you.’ Max grinned. ‘Have you thought any more about my grandma’s offer?’

‘To stay in the campervan until the money comes through from my gran’s place?’

‘Yes.’

‘I told her I’d like to. We were busy planning what bedding to buy while you were in the shower.’ She smiled. They’d found a white duvet cover covered in delicate daffodils, her gran’s favourite flowers.

‘Really? Oh, I feel completely left out of the loop.’

‘Haha, well, if you do insist on spending forty-five minutes in the shower.’ She shrugged.

‘Forty-five minutes! Remember, I’ve got to try not to get this wet.’ He held up his cast.

‘Umm, so you’re back to a three-minute shower when that thing finally comes off then?’ Grinning, Brooke raised her eyebrow.

‘Maybe...’

Brooke stopped as something caught her eye. Squinting, she peered over the edge of the causeway. ‘Is that a suitcase floating in the sea?’

Stepping forward, Max looked to where Brooke was pointing. ‘Yes, I think it is.’

Brooke looked back towards the beach as a loud shout caught her attention. ‘I think we’ve found the owner.’ She frowned as a woman flung herself into the water and began swimming in their direction.

Inching towards the edge of the causeway, Max bent down.

‘Don’t you even think about it? Not with your arm. Plus, you’ll end up ripping your stitches from your operation.’ Pulling him back up, Brooke took his place. ‘Just hold my t-shirt and make sure I don’t fall in. Oh, and make sure the dinosaur doesn’t go anywhere.’ She threw the plastic dinosaur towards the centre of the causeway.

‘Brooke, I’d really rather I was the one to reach down.’

‘Why? Don’t you think I’m capable?’ She glared back at him.

‘No, I know you’re capable. I’d just rather you didn’t cut yourself on the rocks, faint into the sea and pull me in with you. I’m already broken.’

‘Haha, hilarious. Just don’t let me fall.’ Laughing, Brooke leaned over and reached into the sea, careful to avoid the worst of the sharp rocks. She waited until another wave pushed it closer to her and grabbed the handle. ‘Got it!’

‘Knew you could do it!’ Pulling her up, Max grinned.

‘Umm, sure you did, but I’ll forgive you being as you didn’t let me fall in.’ She kissed him before turning and holding the suitcase in the air, trying to get the woman’s attention.

‘She’s not going to swim over here, is she? The waves will knock her into the rocks.’ Holding his arm up, Max began pointing towards the beach. ‘Go back to the beach.’

‘If we start walking that way, she might realise we’re bringing it to her.’

‘Good idea.’ Bending down, Max picked up the dinosaur. ‘Mustn’t forget T-Rex.’

‘Phew, she’s making her way back. I thought we were going to end up calling the coastguard for a minute then.’ Brooke swapped the suitcase to her other hand.

‘Me too.’

They reached the end of the causeway at the same time the woman stepped out from the water.

‘You rescued it! Thank you! Thank you so much!’ Pausing, the woman wrung out her long skirt before running the last couple of metres towards them.

‘No worries. Is everything okay?’
