“Something Penelope said. She referenced a spider spinning a web and referred to it as her. It made me think because if I’ve got this right and please disregard anything I say if you think I’m way off mark but so far women have featured heavily in this. Maybe the person doing this is a woman.”

Thinking of the story that Lucas told me of what happened after the coin left my shop, makes me feel cold inside. To think I played a small part in a staged murder makes me doubt every job I’ve ever carried out. Now there’s this one and I shake my head.

“Penelope lured me into that room and was setting me up to take the blame for killing Lucas. She was going to shoot me too and frame me for his murder. At no point in this has a man ever been named, or even referenced. So, what makes you so sure it’s not a woman?”

The men share a look and Ryder nods slowly. “You make a valid point.”

Lucas squeezes my hand and smiles at me with such pride it makes my soul glow.

Lucas adds, “So what’s your plan with Hunter and what do you need from us?”

“You carry on trying to save your business and looking into who could be leaking information in your own organization. It’s still a possibility because someone is feeding this person, or organization their information. Keep a close eye on Adam, you never know…”

“It’s not him.” Lucas sounds angry and I smile to myself. I love how he loves his best friend. One hundred percent loyalty and an unwavering trust that gives me hope for us. Lucas may not let many people in, but when he does, it’s for life. To be honest, I share his trust in Adam, although God knows why, just call it a sixth sense. Something in Adam’s eyes tells me he’s in the dark on this as much as Lucas.

Ryder nods. “I’ll trust your judgment, but remember to trust nobody and suspect everybody until this mess is solved.”

Lucas says roughly, “So, I repeat, what’s your plan concerning Hunter?”

Ryder shares a look with his right-hand man.

“Well, Ella made a valid observation that had already crossed my mind.”

Snake coughs beside him and Ryder rolls his eyes. “Ok, Snake’s mind.”

He grins as Snake growls, “Always tryin’ to steal the credit.”

Ryder grins and just seeing the two killers sitting before us sharing an obvious comradery that is built on years of trust, makes me warm toward them and feel fascinated by their lives.

Ryder continues. “We are sending someone in as we speak. I’m not sure Hunter will be happy with our choice of protection, but shit happens.”

Snake laughs and appears to be finding something very amusing, and Lucas says with interest. “Who is it?”

“Lexi Mackenzie.”

Lucas laughs loudly and the two men opposite join in. I stare at them in confusion and Lucas turns to me and says with amusement.

“Lexi lived with Ryder and the Reapers for a while a few years back. She was like fire and ice and shook things up a little. She takes no shit but is wrapped in rainbows. She would knit you a scarf and then strangle you with it. A woman of conflicting souls, dark and light, and you never know which one you’re getting.”

Snake grins. “The perfect match for Hunter Blake.”

“Who is Hunter Blake?”

Lucas laughs softly. “The King of Wall Street and the biggest bastard you’d be unfortunate to meet. A man with many enemies, and that’s just his immediate family. The most ruthless bastard ever to rule the markets and one who is so cold the air he breathes out freezes around him.”

“I’m not sure I like the sound of him.”

I shiver just thinking of a man like that, and Ryder nods. “He doesn’t want to be liked. The only thing he wants is money.”

Lucas adds. “He is another member of our organization that makes sure the markets run to our advantage. He protects the country’s investments and nothing gets past him. Whoever is doing this knows where to target because the problems I’m having in my business are all originating from the markets. Someone is casting doubt and causing them to shake. That will be giving Hunter the worst day at the office as he tries to discover the person responsible for that.”

He turns to Ryder. “So, what can Lexi do?”

Ryder smirks. “She can get close to him. If there is a woman involved, she will soon discover their identity. Same if it’s a man. One thing’s for sure, whoever the person is, is using their own operatives to strike from the inside. We put Lexi there, and she reports back to me.”

“And we get to watch Hunter meet his match. Hell, to be a fly on the wall.”

The men laugh, but I’m still worried and say slightly nervously, “Are we all still in danger? I mean, surely we’re still targets because they haven’t got what they set out to do.”
