“Yes, I think that’s a good idea.”

For some reason my mouth dries as I try to wrestle my professionalism back in place and I say curtly, “Ok, let’s pretend you are introducing me to your parents for the first time. We go into the room and we’re say, holding hands.”

I jump up and extend my hand, and he laughs softly. “Role play, are you really doing this?”

“Trust me, I know what I’m doing.”

He stands beside me and I try to concentrate as I slip my hand into his. “Ok, so your mom will be like, Oh, Hunter, darling, how lovely to see you and you’ve brought a friend, how charming.”

He starts to laugh, and I stare at him in surprise. “What’s so funny?”

“You, what was that?”

“I was being your mom.”

For some reason he looks a little nauseous at that and shakes his head. “Please promise me you will never pretend to be my mom again, that’s so disturbing.”

“Why?”

The air is thick with tension and something else as he growls, “Because I don’t want to imagine any part of my mother in the same thoughts that I have of you.”

“Ok…” My word lingers because his meaning is clear. He is affected by me as much as I am him and suddenly this game is a very different one.

Clearing my throat, I say slightly shakily, “Ok, so we’re facing your family and you say, ‘this is Lexi, my girlfriend,’ and we go through the usual niceties. There, that’s probably all we need to do and if you like, you can rest your arm on the back of my chair on the odd occasion and share a loving look once in a while, which should work.”

“Ok, so what if they ask us to stay for the night, what happens then?”

“We refuse.”

I stare at him sharply, and he laughs. “Message received and understood. So, it’s not much fun having a girlfriend really, outside the obvious.”

“Keep telling yourself that, Hunter, it will keep you warm at night.”

Suddenly, I need air and fast, so I step away and fix my blankest look in place. “Anyway, I need Miss. Baxter’s passwords and the key to her drawer. Take as long as you need. I’ll keep myself busy and then you can walk me home, boyfriend.”

I wink as he stands and looks a little disappointed, if I’m honest.

“Ok, I have the things you need on my desk.”

As I head outside to start delving into the life of his assistant, I’m grateful for the distance between us because the more time I spend in Hunter’s company, the deeper I’m falling into a whole heap of trouble.
