Hunter

Today has been like waiting for Santa as a kid. It never seems to end. I haven’t even seen Lexi this morning, which shouldn’t bother me, but it does. When we parted last night, it felt wrong walking away from her. How has this happened? We met yesterday for fuck’s sake; I shouldn’t even be thinking of her right now, let alone for most of the day.

Even the many laborious meetings I had set up throughout the day, couldn’t distract me from wondering what she was doing now. Was she thinking about me? Was she curled up in my apartment counting down the hours until I stepped through the door—I am?

Despite everything, I managed to set a few enquiries in place among my most trusted colleagues. Miss. Baxter has kept me hydrated and well fed and to be honest, I couldn’t operate without her. She knows what I need before I do and just thinking of negotiating through my day with anyone else, doesn’t bear thinking about—except for one other woman—Lexi.

It reaches 5 pm and I’m already thinking of calling it a day. That alone is unheard of because according to my own schedule, I still have around 5 hours of work in front of me.

I’m interrupted by a call from my mom and sighing heavily, I answer it and spin around to look at the view as I steel myself for the extremely unwelcome conversation.

“What’s up?”

“Is that any way to greet your mother, Hunter? Haven’t I raised you better than that?”

“As a child we do what’s required of us, as an adult we do what the fuck we like, so what’s up?”

I have little time for being hauled up for my social skills, especially at my age and mom says curtly, “Still as rude as ever I see.”

“I doubt you see anything because to see is a physical act requiring you to be actually present and as we both know you aren’t, the description is superfluous to the conversation.”

“Hunter…”She exhales sharply, “You are a very clever man, that is not in dispute right now but quite honestly, even though I love you as a mother, I really give up on you sometimes. Now, pleasantries over, who is Lexi?”

I sit up—straight.

“My girlfriend, why?”

My mind is racing because I don’t recall mentioning Lexi to my family and mom says icily, “You could have told your own family first.”

“Told you what?”

“That you’re living with someone. It’s all over the internet and quite frankly, I’m hurt. Sonia Sharples-Smythe called for all the gossip, and she knew more than your own mother. I’m disappointed in you, Hunter, we all are and so we are calling a family meeting this evening to meet your girlfriend and find out what on earth is going on?”

“I don’t have time for this.”

“Hun…”

I cut the call and grab my coat. Lifting my phone to my ear, I call Dobson. “I’m on my way.”

Miss. Baxter looks up in surprise as I leave my office and I say curtly, “Have a good evening, Miss. Baxter.”

“But…”

I don’t stop to explain and just step into my private elevator and count down the minutes until I get back home.

Dobson is waiting as always and as the car door slams behind me, I pull out my phone and start surfing.

I almost struggle to breathe when I see the picture trending right now of Lexi looking shocked in Central Park. She appears to be out jogging and some guy is standing against her, with the caption,

Hunter Blake’s new girlfriend appears to be playing away from home already.

She has her hand on his arm and they look startled as the camera captures a compromising position and I see the anger in Lexi’s eyes as she looks in the direction of the camera. I think my blood actually boils when I see the man’s body against hers and yet it’s Lexi’s eyes that worry me the most. She looks upset and that is not ok with me.

As soon as we stop, I’m out of the car and striding toward my private elevator, telling Dobson to head home. He won’t be needed tonight.

I tap my foot angrily on the elevator floor as I count down the seconds until I see the woman herself and can’t remember the last time I felt so angry.

This just can’t be happening right now and my first thought was to get home and make sure she’s ok.
