Pausing a moment to deliver the final words that will make Hunter run for his life, I whisper, “They handed me the knife they intended using on my brother and told me to finish the job. I will never forget how hard that was. I kneeled before my mom’s thrashing body as the pain caused her screams to be the last thing I heard. I’m not sure she even recognized me as I kneeled before her and held the knife to her throat. The gun was trained on the back of my head and I saw so much suffering in my mom’s eyes, I couldn’t bear a second more. So, I slit her throat and as the blood spurted into my eye, it was like crying the blood of the damned. The men’s laughter was mixed with my father’s screams as they emptied another bullet into his groin and I didn’t stop to think and just did what I had to do because surely it was better to end their life than to prolong it in agony. Once again his blood coated my face and mixed with my tears but I wasn’t given anytime to grieve before I was pulled from the trailer after my brother who was then knocked out cold and dragged into the car.”

It’s almost too much, but I’ve come this far and must finish the story and Hunter hasn’t let me out of his tight hold for a second since I started speaking. I relax a little against him and say huskily. “I was thrown on top of him with a gun trained on my head and we started a journey I thought would end my life. All the time the men told me in graphic detail what they were going to do to me and if I didn’t fight, they would spare my brother’s life. As it turned out, it was theirs that ended before the journey concluded because the car was ambushed and they suffered death by machine gun fire. I covered Chase with my body and prayed for glorious oblivion but as it turned out, it was the start of something that saved both our lives.”

As I think about the direction, our lives took on that night, I offer thanks to God and say softly, “Ryder King ordered a hit on the dealers. We were caught up in that and taken to the Rubicon. I’m not saying I wasn’t scared shitless because I was. Those guys mean business and when they strike it’s not pretty. We were taken in and cared for and the rest, as they say, is history because when it came down to it, both of us wanted to pay them back. Chase became a Reaper and trained hard and so did I.”

“I’m guessing that didn’t go down well with Ryder.”

I laugh and turn to stare into Hunter’s eyes. As his arms tighten around me, I say softly, “I never gave them a choice. I insisted on it and what can I say, I can be a royal pain in the ass until I get what I want.”

He leans down and kisses me lightly on the lips and whispers against my mouth, “Then we were made for each other.”

Somehow, telling Hunter wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. He seems to accept me, past and all, and there is no look of horror in his eyes when he sees the whole of me. If anything, he is looking at me with even more adoration and I can’t even begin to explain how good that makes me feel.

As he pulls me closer and his kiss deepens, I feel a burden fall from my shoulders. He was right, it did feel good to talk and even better that he didn’t judge me, just accepted me for what I was and who I am now and who wouldn’t be impressed with that?
