He chuckles. “He may not feel like accepting the job.”

“He’s bad then.”

“What do you think?”

Part of me feels bad for Holly, but this man must have known what he was dealing with when he started and I guard my words carefully.

“Is he working alone?”

“No.”

Ryder’s answer is abrupt and I know better than to ask the name of the actual person responsible, so I say in a lighter tone, “And Holly?”

“Needs to know nothing. She can continue as normal.”

Thinking about Holly and the many questions she will surely have, Ryder must read my mind because he says quickly, “Just tell her he’s helping us solve the problem. She doesn’t need to know the details. Thank her and move on, it’s best that way.”

“What if I can’t move on? What if I’ve made her an offer she’s already accepted? I had to get the information somehow. It didn’t come cheap either.”

Ryder laughs and I can picture his smirk from here.

“Then enjoy what you paid so well for.”

For some reason, I don’t like the thought that I paid for Holly. It doesn’t seem right, but isn’t that exactly what happened. She’s only here for what I can give her, and I don’t like how that makes me feel.

So I bite and snap, “Fuck you, Ryder, keep me posted.”

I cut the call and turn my head to business. I can’t think about that conversation for a moment longer because if I do, I would hate myself even more than I do already. Like everything in my life, the people in it are only there because I pay them to be.
